Could you direct me to the posts, if you remember? The CV-001 thread is rather dauntingly huge.

I recently discovered Weibo and just saw it on one of the big military Vs and I thought it was new.

Don't believe everything on Weibo or Chinese internet unless it's from a known reliable user with a good track record.

As for the old posts, I probably can't find it either because Im not even sure which thread it was in let alone which post it as (might have been 6 months to a year ago). But you can find other pictures of Liaoning with those modules on deck from its early trial days that show the modules did not have any laser turret and only antennae and telemetry equipment.

And I don't think anyone seriously thinks it makes sense for the low altitude guard laser system to be tested on Liaoning either.

I'll just leave these here...
this only was a step to make Liaoning ready, esp. 4 landing operations (make sensors working);

I am posting this article in this thread as it is related. This is India's plan for the next aircraft carrier. Its seems that they will have only 1 diesel carrier before moving to a nuclear carrier by 2030 (?). Is this realistic and how would the maintenance be for the Vikrant without a sister ship? And looking at the article, it seems more like a wish list rather than concrete plans. This seems in opposition to the steady inexorable progress by PLAN. Any opinions?

This may be more relevant for the India military thread. But yes, I do think their plans for moving from a 37,000 ton INS Vikrant to a 65,000 ton nuclear INS Vishal will be viewed with some skepticism, especially in context of how some of the IN's previous big ticket warship projects have gone. OTOH, I also think it would be discourteous for us to express anymore than that.

Good luck to them.

New and noteworthy:

Professor Jin Yinan (who is director of the strategic research institute at the PLA's National Defence University) at this conference said construction of China's third aircraft carrier began in March 2015 at JNCX!! 3:57 of the video, and it would be "flat deck, catapult take off". Consistent with known rumours of course.

I assume that means steel cutting beginning in March 2015. If true (and I do believe it most likely is, and corresponds with previous/current rumours), I think we will probably see modules of 002 start to appear at JNCX next year at earliest.

Great news. This means they could launch her, their first CATOBAR carier, in the 2020 time frame!

Interesting times for sure!

I look forward to seeing her take shape.

I wonder if there is a possibility that they start and build a 2nd offset by 4-6 months? That would be something, but probably too provocative.

We shall see.

Considering construction (likely steel cutting) of 001A at Dalian was said to have began in mid-late 2013, and visible assembly of modules first appeared in april/may 2015 (about 1.5-2 years after construction began), and considering 002 will likely be a bigger and more complex ship than 001A, I do believe we may see it put together in late 2017 to early 2018. From there, a 2020 launch time is definitely well within possibility.

Now the question is what will follow the first 002/CV-18... Another 002 at DL (maybe a "002A"?), or will they pause carrier production a few years, or maybe even leap directly to CVN? Who knows...

Starting from Xi, each President will see two carriers built and commissioned during their 10 year term.
