cool post; I wish you you're right :)

and I have a dumb question (sorry if it's been addressed before here, I only recently began looking at Type 055):
I've read (in a Polish naval journal back from 2014) Type 052Ds are assembled from nine hull segments (one of the reasons of so fast build up); is a similar procedure used for Type 055 and if so, with how many segments?

Well, 055 does use modular construction yes, based on what we've seen. Most if not all Chinese warships in the last decade or so have been built in that manner.

you may recall
Oct 20, 2016

as for Type 052D I now noticed the argument in a Polish naval journal in support of 280 crew members, and this argument was based on the numbers/types of rescue craft on board

(I hope now the Chinese team here will not jump at me again! I'm not saying a Chinese warship will founder or nothing)

Unsure how many personnel 055 may have, and like I said I wasn't too sure just how many personnel 052D has either.

Using basin width length:
055 estimated total length = (1.74) x 39.7m + (2.69) x 39.7m = 175.8m

Using 052D length:
055 estimated total length = (0.44) x 156.6m + (0.68) x 156.6m = 175.4m

One can also measure the beam of the modules as well using the same method, and I end up with a beam of about 20.5m or 20.7m, or somewhere in between.

Thanks blitzo. I see that your estimates match very well mines that i posted in this forum in june 2015 based on the satelite photo of the wuhan mockup:

how can a ship with aprox. 175 meters length and 20 meters wide have only 8000t displacement?

Close; that said my estimate for the bow and stern sections do not include the completed bow which will likely take it up to 180mish, and the difference in beam of 0.5m while not seemingly big would have quite significant consequence for the ship's displacement.

But overall, the projected completed length for this ship is quite close to what many predicted back two years ago when the mock up first emerged. The beam however is a bit smaller than some predictions, like 21m-23m range.

That said, back then I wasn't too confident if 055 would end up approaching 180m in length or closer to 175m.

If the length is anywhere close to 180m, then the displacement is definitely going to be in the range of 12-13kt full. Also, the forward VLS is almost certainly going to be a 2x4 VLS module arrangement, with the rear bank still in question. A crew of 280 for this kind of ship is achievable with some degree of automation. That step platform is going to be there. I will take a wager on it.
Close Slava Class, less big than a Zumwalt mainly less futuristic less automated, Chinese don't like progress to big steps also.
But wide as all recent combattants which are more than before, stability matter ?

Not really. The PLAN chose to build a 7,000 ton ship because they wanted to build a 7,000 ton ship. They were not limited in any way by engine technology. They were likely only limited by shipbuilding experience, or doctrine/perceived need, or a combination of both. The 052C uses the DN-80 imported from the Ukraine. If they had wanted to build a 10 or even 12,000 ton ship, they would simply have imported and installed four DN-80s per ship instead of two. This would be the rough equivalent of the four QC-280s per 055 that we (likely) have presently.

I think power plant limitation definite played a role on ship size. China doesn't like to rely on foreign imports for major weapon systems if it can help it. Look at how Russian frigate programs are doing with Ukrainian engines. And warships take many years of design and planning before construction can start. I bet 055 program didn't get the approval until Ukrainian gas turbines can be produced domestically.

Another factor is logistics. PLAN didn't start major replenishment ships construction until recently. Bigger ships burn more fuel.

QC-280 engine is not a clone of ukrainian engines. Its a more powerful version, at least thats what been mentioned in this forum. But i dont think that there is certainty in this, so perhabs it could be a clone. IDK

ok, until foreign technologies have been digested.

I'm a bit disappointed that the beam is only about 20.5m, with length at 180m, full load displacement at 13,500t and propulsion rated at 4 x 28 MW.

Here are the corresponding numbers for some destroyers/cruisers in more or less the same class:

Type Length (m) Beam (m) Full-load (t) Propulsion (MW)
Arleigh Burke 155 20 9,200 4 x 19.8
KDX-III 165 21.4 11,000 75
Atago 165 21 10,000 75
Slava 186.4 20.8 12,000 97

052D 156 18 7,500 2 x 28 + 2 x 6

QC-280, the gas turbine that 055 and 052D use, is rated at 28MW. Even at a lower rate of 23MW, as some claimed, the combined power output is still larger than most of the above ships with the possible exception of Slava.

I had thought they would go for a beam of at least 22m.

Depending on how one measures it, the beam might be up to 21m, because the "crease" which is the widest vertical point on the ship is lower than on other past ships which may make it satellite measurements for beam not as accurate.

A 20.5m-21m beam is a bit lower than what I expected; I thought it would probably be closer to 22m as well, but given it also has a likely total length of 180m I am still pleasantly surprised overall.

length to beam about 9:1 ... a view from the angle like below will be cool:
