Chinese Economics Thread

the best I've heard here so far;
Has China Discovered a Better Political System Than Democracy?
“One person, one vote is not the only morally legitimate way to select leaders,” a political theorist says.

is how it starts ... the most interesting part perhaps is "... if there is a coherent China model, it may be more of a “red empire” in which authoritarian leaders choose their own successors from a political elite and remain repressive in order to manage a complex society." ... not exactly

Every country has their own political tradition that suit them well that is why I said to each according to its own. Coming back to your post. You do know what happened to Soviet union after prestroika. Dissolution of Soviet Union, reduce status, economic chaos, misery, and the rise of economic mafia and oligarchy.

Only in recent years after Putin more or less turn back the prestroika that they managed a semblance of stability due to higher oil price. Now that oil price tank thing doesn't look so rosy again.

But coming back to your quote. Who would you rather have a leader that was trained and picked thru merit and has been proven for long time to be capable leader.

Or like they do in the west they choose some one who has charisma and good at speeches that can rouse the crowd. And he or she will promise everything to everybody . But knowing well they can't kept that promise and soon after get elected they renegade on their promise.

I would rather have some one who had proven track record in running government(meritocracy) rather than good orator(demo crazy)
Singapore is a good example economic crisis come and go but they keep getting richer and richer by the day

Fox: "Meritocracy" as a term -- and you go into this -- arose from a depiction of how it might work that

. How do you think about the balance between the good side of meritocracy and the inevitable negative tendencies that seem to be built into it?

that has a process to select and promote public officials based on superior intellectual skill, social skill and virtue. It's a highly imperfect system, but it has a long history in China. In the past two decades or so it's been brought back, and I think the country was primed for it because of its terrible experience with radical populism and arbitrary dictatorship in the Cultural Revolution. The advantages are pretty clear: you have long periods of training for public officials, you don't have to be so short-term minded. But the disadvantages are also clear: it can be easier for officials to be corrupt, to exercise arbitrary power, for the system to be ossified. But the disadvantages have to be addressed on the basis of a meritocratic foundation.

In China people generally accept -- intellectuals, government people -- that of course there are different countries with diverse political cultures. But somehow in the U.S. and Canada, where I'm from, there is still a view that the only morally legitimate form of selecting leaders is one person, one vote, and it's just a matter of time till China comes around.

LOL!

there is more thing I wanted to know about Communistic China (and was afraid to ask in this thread :)
Has the huge, fast economic growth been achieved at the expense of the environment?
(I've read some regions are pretty much destroyed, with more to come, that's why I took interest in Sep 1, 2016
which took us here :)

Dude, are you trying to imply that aqicn.org is somehow a propaganda tool of the Chinese government?

FYI, when my mother-in-law wanted to take my son to China for a few months last year, I used this site to show her the high pollution level China was experiencing at the time. I showed her not only the air quality index for a day or two, but trends over an entire year.

FYI #2, China's smog problems happen in the winter. Summer months are generally fine.

I understand where Jura is coming from. He is probably old enough to remember the Czechoslovak Communist period which was no fun. So he equates Communism in China with what he knows from his own experience or that of his family in Czechoslovakia. Which is quite natural.

I suppose Jura isn't part of this group of people. :D

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's value-added industrial output, an important economic indicator, increased mildly in August -- an encouraging sign for a slowing economy.

Industrial output expanded 6.3 percent year on year last month, faster than the 6-percent increase for July and the 6.1 percent posted for the same period of last year, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday.

Industrial output measures the output of Chinese companies with annual main business revenue of more than 20 million yuan (3 million U.S. dollars).

According to the breakdown, the industrial output in less-developed western regions rose 7.9 percent, followed by 7.8 percent for central regions and 7.2 percent in the east.

However, northeastern areas plagued by serious overcapacity did not fare so well, with a 2-percent output drop.

By sectors, automobile manufacturing jumped 21.4 percent in August, followed by 11.5 percent in the pharmaceutical sector and 10.6 percent in electronics manufacturing, NBS said.

In the first eight months, industrial output increased 6 percent from a year ago.

And some people think it's absurd when I tell them Obama plans to stop China from buying their own domestic airliner that will only be bought by Chinese airliners by filing a WTO complaint that's it's subsidized so that Boeing airliners don't face Chinese competition in China... Now he wants to raise the price of rice in China so that US farmers can sell in China.

Doesn't US farmers get a lot of subsidies from the US government too ? And why do countries hand out subsidies anyway far better to give them tax cuts instead.

Farmers is a strategically important .... during peace time (like now), there is no issues buying grains from anywhere as long as you have money .... imagine during hard/war time where nobody wants to sell you any grain/food ? ...... your people would suffer badly in hunger

Thats why Japanese government subsidize their farmers in big way, it is important for Japan to still have farmers and producing food (even not competitive at all) for the population for strategic reason ... as Japan is only 39% food self sufficient .... it means over 60% of food need to be imported ... without subsidy, the number could go down to only 10%

China also want to maintain minimum 95% of food self sufficient ... at the moment the grain production in China is increasing every year, the number now may over 100%
