I thought all sports in the Olympics had to have equal participation by men and women. So why do we have synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics for women only?.

Because the Olympics is sexist against men!

I'm kidding, of course...

But seriously, no one wants to see a whole bunch of men dancing in the water. It's not a good image...

Because of that, not a lot of men participate in synchronized swimming. Without participants, there is no game to play...

Never say never.
There was a movie made about boys synchronized swimming a decade ago.

Yep! Could be!

I'm just trying to come up with an explanation for what is happening now.

Who knows... The trend might change in the future and synchronized swimming might become a new trend among men. Then the Olympics will add men's synchronized swimming to the list.

They added trampoline to the Olympics only recently. I honestly still don't think trampoline is a proper sport fit for the Olympics.

Jamaica has 6 gold medals for a population of less than 3 million. Ratio wise that would likely be the best. To your point India is not known to be a sports powerhouse so it is what it is I guess.

China came in 3rd behind GB. I thought they would do better honestly but no doubt the US blew everyone away. With the inclusion of baseball and skateboarding the advantage favors countries like the US in the next Olympic. Also with Bolt retiring, the field is wide open again in the sprints. I was impressed by the 4 x 100 Japanese relay team! They came in 2nd behind Jamaica!

Yeah but China had been dominating the summer Paralympic games since 2004. And I wouldn't be surprise they would do it again this time as well.

If I remember correctly, trampoline was one of the original competitive games of modern day Olympics.

On the other hand Kendo will never become one of the competitions of Olympics since they prize chivalry or Bushido highly where the umpire will declare invalid of ippon when the one who won made a winning pose during the match.

Hmmm... trampoline first appeared at the Olympics in 2000.

Anyone else think that team sport medals should count as one medal for each player in the team? It's pretty ridiculous that a single person like Phelps or Bolt can rack up multiple medals in minor variations of their sport, while a dozen people going through rounds and rounds end up with only a single medal count.

Actually both Phelps and Bolt has to go through the qualification rounds first before they can do the final round for medals of their respected sports. Meanwhile in team sports you got some players that are not starters but bench warmers (yes they put the same amount of work as the starters) whom played occasionally when needed. Team sports are different than individual one (besides relays in both swimming and track).

Yeah, I understand that, and it could be argued that a 2-minute swim can be as grueling as a 40-minute match, but still, it's disconcerting to follow your team for weeks through ups and downs, only to see them get a single medal count after all that work.

Another solution is for the summer Olympics to go back to its ancient greek origins, and only have gymnastics and athletics (and swimming too, since that's just aquatic athletics). This would cut down on the total medal count and make each medal more worthwhile.

I'd say team wins should be worth 3 medals on the table (doubles don't count as team). But most of all, I think they've butchered weightlifting. In weightlifting, there's the snatch, the clean and jerk, and the total score; those are worth 3 separate medals at the world's but only 1 at the Olympics! If they did this to swimming, then you'd have only 1 medal for the medley and none for the individual strokes! Then, there's no team score for weightlifting but there's 4 man rely for running and swimming, team for gymnastics, etc...! I'm an obvious fan of weightlifting, but to be fair, I think there should be 3 medals (snatch, clean and jerk, total) for each weight category (8 in men and 7 in women for 15 categories so 45 medals so far), then, men's team snatch, clean and jerk, total, (3 medals) and women's team snatch, clean and jerk, total (3 more) totaling 51 gold medals for weightlifting! Also, you can enter 3 runners or 3 swimmers into all the events but for some reason, each country can only enter 10 lifters among the 15 weight ranks in weightlifting! This rule affects no one except China and maybe Russia since no one else has close to 10 good medal contenders anyway! I say anyone who qualifies (lifts a certain weight at the world's) should be able to compete, or at least allow 1 spot for each category per country (so China doesn't have to be so cruel to its own athletes that someone good for solid silver gets eliminated in team selection). But they'll never do any of that cus then China will never worry about topping the medal tally again, winning about 25 gold just from weightlifting in a bad year! LOL Instead, they'll do swimming, 4 different strokes (invent some more if you need to), each 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 4 man combo, 4 stroke combo, swimming with a black cap, swimming with a red cap, swimming with no hair, swimming with short hair, swimming with long hair, swimming with a ring on, swimming with 2 rings on, etc... LOL
