Submunitions also means you can pretty much give up the effort for a terminal interception.
Basically once the fleet location is discovered and tracked it is game over. Doesn't matter if it is not taken out in one shot because they can steadily degrade its capabilities with successive waves.

Not necessarily. Depends entirely on the altitude of separation.

If submunitions are release high up in the atmosphere, trying to intercept them because a fool's errand.

However, if they are only release a short distance from target, it's still perfectly possible to take out the primary weapon before it had a chance to replease it's payload.

What submunitions does is give you a far bigger margin for error and allow you to target much smaller targets, like escorts, with a high probability of causing significant damage.

Ideally you would want a layered attack. First wave with submunitions to soften up the enemy fleet's soft kill and hard kill defences, followed up swiftly with unity warhead AShBMs to deliver the heavy knock-out blow, followed by saturation conventional AShM strikes to mop up what's left.

Send in unarmed transports to drop life rafts and deploy search and rescue and hospital ships to the scene as an olive branch, with the right public statements (along the lines of, we are not your enemy, you forced our hand by attacking and we were forced to defend ourselves. Do you want to end this here and now or shall we go a few more rounds?) and news crew footage and put the other side in a tight spot, especially if they started the whole thing by attacking first.

Submunitions deployed at a sensible height can also be very useful against carriers and not only their escorts, and could provide a mission kill by damaging the catapults, arresting gear, flight deck itself, and even the island, and all other relatively soft machinery and electronics exposed on the surface.

Yes, although ISTAR will be the big difficulty in both of these, and as the range of the operation increases from shore the more difficult it will be to have good ISTAR.
Geosynchronous satellites will probably be one of the key future assets in this regard.

A nice idea, and could be possible, but probably quite hard to execute given the other side probably won't exactly take any loss of a carrier lying down and may cause public opinion to become inflamed and hostile to China.

That said, this is probably getting too close to discussing a conflict scenario between China and the US, so it's probably best not to elaborate on the situation too much.

Like they say...."an inundated offense (ASBM) beats and an inundated defense (ships missile defense) EVERY time.." Just go ask Retired Marine General Paul Van Riper about his Millennium 2002 Challenge success.;):)

Underway replenishment. Was it David Axe who said the PLAN was incapable of underway replenishment?

Those vests on the marines look several sizes too big. They are hanging loose and not providing anywhere as much protection as properly sized vests of the same design would offer.

Also, that's the first time I have seen an active duty PLA trooper using a proper helmet mount, although even that looks like it is tied onto the helmet by the back strap rather than being integrated directly into the helmet.

I think these are the little niggly areas that are hard a real eye sour, but which will be stamped out real quick if the PLA ever fight in a real war. But sadly, they will loose some lives unnecessarily until those lessons are learnt if they go into battle like that.

Equation

It has to be several sizes large in order to fit over a thick winter coat or jacket. Vests are not necessary for summer time use only.

Very nice pics. Thanks!

That's a German Braunschweig-class corvette, with two RAM launchers, a 76mm gun, two 27mm auto cannons, and four ASW missiles, displacing about 1,900 tons. It also has a pad and spaces fro two VSUVs. Also a Spanish BAM (Buque de Acción Marítima) OPV, with a 76mm gun and two 25mm cannons, also a pad and hanger for an NH-90 helo. It displaces about 2,650 tons.

Both are decent vessels, but the true FFG there is the Type 054A class.

China Launched Floating Dock Huachuan I to Repair PLAN Vessels Virtually Anywhere
lpkEKkL.jpg

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) launched its first self-propelled floating dock nammed Huachuan I. According to the the official People’s Liberation Army Daily, “The ship’s launch marks a further breakthrough in shifting repairs to our military’s large warships from set spots on the coast to mobility far out at sea.”

The dock can repair almost the entire PLAN fleet corvettes, frigates, destroyers and submarines (but not the Liaoning aircraft carrier or the Type 071 LPDs) virtually anywhere.
