You can shove as many aircraft aboard a CV as the ship can physically accommodate. But you'd better have berthing for the crew that will maintain those birds and work spaces for shops that repair things that break on those birds. And military aircraft need constant maintenance if they are to preform their duties when called on..

Also you can't pack a hangar full of aircraft with no room left for safety.. such as moving or maintaining aircraft, fire, emergencies etc..

When aircraft are in the hangar there needs to be an aisle open to safely travel from bow to stern and vice versa.

I understand and agree with you that you can not operate your air wing and squeeze them in hangar at the same time. But in the Russian case they don't operate them they just put them in hangar to protect them from extreme weather and etc. They will just be there for a short period of time and when the sun comes out again (and clean deck of ice or whatever if necessary) they can relocate their aircraft to deck and resume the operation. But since it's pretty harsh up north and in bad days any jets or helos on deck have a chance of lost, they have to design their wing that when needed all of them can seek hide in hangar with no one left behind unlike carrier wings from other countries which most of their harbor don't get freeze.

The US Navy operates (including flight operations) in harsh winter weather whenever necessary. Aircraft on deck, taking off and landing.

They do not put all of the aircraft in the hanger. They clear the deck (particularly of ice when necessary as you can see in the fourth photo), and when necessary, conduct flight operations Ice, snow, fog, rain...all notwithstanding.









Above, in that last picture, you see sailors cleaning the flight deck forward...but behind them you can see many aircraft on deck ready to begin launching.

The US Navy has been doing this for a long time. World War II, the Korean War, and ever since.



Now, there are some restriction, particularly in very heavy seas.

But I have also seen aircraft launces from US carriers when the deck is pitching up and down pretty heavily, timing the launch on the upstroke so to speak.

Popeye, to whom you were replying, spent well over 20 years on US carriers working with aircraft. He knows exactly what he is talking about. He is not really dissing Russia or anyone else...he is simply stating the facts of carrier operations from one who has done it on the most active, most advanced carriers in the world.

I count 11 airplanes. Behind the camera position I suspect even the crane, two fire trucks, tractors and other ground service equipment. Somewhere also is still a boat. That's it, more does not go into the hangar.

It is American policy to be able to store 40% of the airwing in the hangar.

Other navies not take more aircraft on board than they can accommodate in the hangar.

Liaoning has not sailed the Syrian coast, which is a hoax, if you allude to it.

That was a falsehood.. so I do not think CV-16 is ready to conduct air strikes against ISIS targets in Syria or Iraq. Why?.... they are just not ready in my opinion.
