Interesting last sentence, huh?
This is why the war reminded me of the "Schanzen Oorlog" around the North East Dutch town of Groningen at the end of the sixteenth century as I mentioned a few weeks ago. I recognized the pattern without seeing the details. Thank you.
With plenty of UAV's and helicopters the enemy fighters will have a bad time of it.

Looking at edmaps updated map of this area at 1pm today, I would say the answer is a resounding no!

A brigadier general and a colonel from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) were killed while fighting jihadists and rebels in Syria over the past several weeks. Nine other IRGC members were also killed during that time.

Colonel Mostafa Ezzatollah Soleimani, who served as a “military adviser to the Syrian army,” was killed in battle against “the Takfiri terrorists” in Aleppo province,

, Iran’s semi-official news organization. The Iranian news agency did not relay how the colonel was killed, or which groups his unit was fighting.

Soleimani previously served as the “commander of the Elite Battalion of Hazrat Bani Hashem (AS) Brigade 44 in the city of Shahr-e Kord in Western Iran.” His former brigade is said to be an elite IRGC special operations unit.

Brigadier General Reza Khavari, another senior IRGC commander, was killed during fighting in “central Syria,” Fars News reported. Like Soleimani, he was also “fulfilling his duty as a military adviser” to Syrian forces.

Prior to advising Syrian military units, Khavari was “the senior commander of IRGC’s Fatemiyoun Division.”

Fars News also reported that nine other IRGC members,

, were killed in combat in Syria at the end of October. Five of them were identified as: Major Seyed Sajjad Hosseini from the Khordad 15 Artillery; Mostafa Sadrzadeh, Seyed Ali Hosseini Alemi, and Seyed Milad Mostafavi from the Fatemiyoun Division; and Amin Karimi from the Ansar Division. The names of the other four IRGC members were not disclosed.

Additionally, another senior IRGC commander, Brigadier General Hossein Hamedani, was killed while battling the Islamic State outside of Aleppo. Hamedani’s death was mourned by Iran’s president, the minister of defense, the foreign minister, and other senior Iranian officials. [See LWJ report,

Iran has reportedly deployed significant forces, estimated at thousands of troops, in support of the Assad regime’s offensive to retake areas controlled by the al Qaeda-led Jaysh al Fateh coalition and other groups in Hama and Aleppo. Iranian officials have denied that their military units are deployed as combat formations in Syria, insisting their officers and troops are merely serving in an advisory capacity.

Five field grade IRGC officers have been killed while fighting in the Syrian and Iraqi wars over the past year. Dozens of other lower ranking officers and troops are also thought to have been killed in the two countries during that timeframe.

In January,

of the Qods Force and five other Iranian officers, as well as six Hezbollah fighters, were killed in what is thought to have been an Israeli airstrike in Quneitra, Syria.

In May,

, a commander in the Iranian military, was killed while fighting against the Islamic State near Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar in Iraq. Nouri was reportedly advising the Iranian-backed Shiite militias that are attempting to retake Ramadi from the Islamic State.

Also, in December 2014, the IRGC announced that Brigadier General Hamid Taqavi was

while serving in Samarra, close to the shrine of Imam Hassan Askari. Taqavi advised and fought alongside Saraya Khorasani, an Iranian-backed Shiite militia that lauded the general after his death.

Iran has invested significantly in the Shiite-led Syrian and Iraqi governments, which are mired in multi-sided wars with Sunni jihadist groups, rebels, and other actors. Major General Qassem Soleimani, the head of IRGC’s Qods Force, has personally intervened in several key battles in Iraq, and has appeared on multiple battlefields in both Iraq and Syria. Most recently, the Qods Force leader was photographed while rallying Iranian troops and Hezbollah fighters in Aleppo.

all indications are that this follows a trend showing a deep embedding of IRGC in the front lines of Pro Assad forces.

A Jund al Aqsa fighter raises an al Qaeda-style black banner in Morek.

Jund al Aqsa, an al Qaeda front group in Syria, claims to have seized much of the town of Morek from Bashar al Assad’s regime. The town sits on a major highway connecting the cities of Aleppo and Hama. The group posted celebratory photos (seen above and below) on its official Twitter feed earlier today. The images show the jihadists in control of positions within Morek.

One photo shows Jund al Aqsa fighters taking possession of an Assad regime tank. Other images show the jihadists taking “spoils” and raising an al Qaeda-style black “banner of monotheism” within the town.

It is not clear as of this writing if the entire town has fallen, or parts of it. A tweet from Jund al Aqsa indicates that the fighting is still ongoing. But a 30 second video also shows the organization’s members driving through the center of Morek, which has clearly suffered from the ravages of war. Many of the town’s buildings have been extensively damaged, with rubble spilling out into the road.

Jund al Aqsa is openly loyal to al Qaeda chief Ayman al Zawahiri and has been staffed with al Qaeda veterans. In April, the group’s official Twitter feed posted a “martyrdom” notice for Adel Radi Saker al Wahabi al Harbi, an

as part of the so-called Khorasan group. Jund al Aqsa indicated that Harbi was also its “military commander.”

In May, another seasoned al Qaeda member, Said Arif, was

. Arif’s death was reported by multiple jihadists on social media. He was allegedly killed in an airstrike conducted by the US-led coalition.

Jund al Aqsa was founded by Sheikh Abdul Aziz al Qatari, who

for al Qaeda in Afghanistan and was “

” Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri. Qatari’s corpse was found in late 2014, months after he disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

On October 23, Jund al Aqsa announced its split from the Jaysh al Fateh coalition in Syria. The move raised eyebrows in the jihadist community. Jaysh al Fateh was co-founded by Al Nusrah Front, an official branch of al Qaeda, and Jund al Aqsa’s own ties to al Qaeda are easy to see.

Jund al Aqsa has played an important role in some of Jaysh al Fateh’s key battles in northwest Syria this year. During the battle for the city of Idlib, for example, its suicide bombers struck checkpoints manned by the Assad regime early on, thereby

to stream in. Idlib fell to Jaysh al Fateh in just several days.

While Jund al Aqsa’s break from Jaysh al Fateh threatens to weaken the jihadists’ unity to a degree, it does not mean that the group has left al Qaeda’s ranks. Instead, Jund al Aqsa objects to some of the tactics adopted by its fellow jihadists, including those in Ahrar al Sham. Officials from Ahrar al Sham have fired back at the group, saying its criticisms are unwarranted. Jund al Aqsa also has misgivings about fighting the Islamic State, al Qaeda’s rival, even though the group rejects the Abu Bakr al Baghdadi’s self-declared “caliphate.”

Jund al Aqsa’s statement announcing its withdrawal from Jaysh al Fateh has been translated by the SITE Intelligence Group. In it, Ayman al Zawahiri is described as “the sheikh of the mujahideen of today” and “his eminence.” Jund al Aqsa prays that Allah will “preserve and protect [Zawahiri], and let him hold firm to the truth until the day of meeting Him [Allah].”

By praising Zawahiri in this manner, Jund al Aqsa clearly signaled its continuing loyalty to al Qaeda.

Major pro-al Qaeda ideologues, such as Sheikh Abdullah Mohammed al Muhaysini, have been attempting to convince Jund al Aqsa to rejoin Jaysh al Fateh. There are conflicting reports regarding how successful these efforts have been.

In the meantime, the organization continues to fight alongside Al Nusrah Front. On October 26, Jund al Aqsa tweeted a eulogy for three fighters killed by a mine. At least one of the three, known as Abu al Zubayr al Ansari, was a member of Al Nusrah.

The Al Nusrah Front, al Qaeda’s official branch in Syria, has accused the Shuhadaa Al Baydhaa brigade, led by a rebel named Abdulbasit Sarout, of secretly swearing allegiance to Abu Bakr al Baghdadi’s self-declared “caliphate.” The Shuhadaa Al Baydhaa brigade is based in the northern part of Syria’s Homs province.

According to Al Nusrah, Sarout’s men were assassinating people in the area and planning to carry out additional attacks using improvised explosive devices. Sarout was offered arbitration before a sharia court, but allegedly refused. Eventually, Al Nusrah raided villages controlled by Sarout’s men and claims to have captured “spoils” from them.

Earlier today, on its official Twitter feed for the Homs province, Al Nusrah posted several photos of “medium and light weapons and ammunition” captured during the assault. The photos can be seen below.

There may be more to the story than Al Nusrah is letting on, however. Tensions between Al Nusrah and Sarout’s brigade have been brewing for months. In September, Shuhadaa Al Baydhaa

denying that it had joined the Islamic State. This illustrates that Al Nusrah has been circulating its allegation for some time.

earlier this month that Al Nusrah isn’t telling the truth about Shuhadaa Al Baydhaa’s purported connections to the Islamic State.

“The regime established a security cordon across northern Homs and the adjacent southern Hama countryside more than two years ago, intending to block supplies originating in Turkey from moving south into rebel-held north Homs,” Syria Direct

. This cordon “has mostly been effective,” but there is a small pocket of turf that allows the rebels to move weapons and supplies into the northern part of Homs. It just so happens that the villages controlled by Shuhadaa Al Baydhaa are in this area.

On its Twitter feed for Homs, Al Nusrah claims to have taken territory from Shuhadaa Al Baydhaa.

Pictures posted by Al Nusrah showing weapons and ammunition seized from the Shuhadaa Al Baydhaa brigade:

After reading all of This I'm beginning to wonder who are we supposed to be helping I thought all of these guys really don't like us very much I'm beginning to think we should start backing Assad if this is the alternative at least we know him and what he's going to do Syria cannot be allowed to fall to these characters we all thought lybia was bad just imagine what would happen if Syria descends into that chaos Isreal would not feel very comfortable at all and neither should western civilization just my two cents worth

... non-ISIL sources are coy about what's going on to the east from Aleppo this weekend, ...

actually I found something "consistent":
  • "The Syrian army troops, the NDF fighters and the Lebanese Hezbollah forces, backed up by the Russian fighter jets, on Saturday tightened noose around the ISIL terrorists near Sheikh Ahmad and its surrounding areas to lift over a two-year-long siege of the strategic Kuweires airbase." in Official: Hezbollah Stays in Syria Until Final Victory

  • "In the east of the province, the Syrian Arab army, alongside popular self-defense forces and the Lebanese Hezbollah, destroyed ISIL fortified positions and hideouts in several areas outside the city of Aleppo, including Sheikh Ahmad following a series of airstrikes by Russian Aerospace Defense Forces." in
