With the armed forces of Turkey getting more and more advanced...and with their pivotal position in the Mid-East area, I decided an individual thread for them is warranted.

This thread will be about Turkish Military News, pcitures, videos, and happenings.

Please levae all politica/ideological discussion out of it.

I will start with the following:

Nice!

I have to say that that Spanish design (for their Juan Carlos) is getting pretty good play.

Spain, Australia, and now Turkey.

A very good move by Turkey and nice to see the LHD programme develop

Add to that the LST and LCT units and you have the first true Turkish navy fast amphibious assault force

And to give a update on Milgem programme

First two units F511 and F512 are operational

3rd and 4th units have had keel laid at Istanbul naval shipyard

By the way Turkish Navy is visiting Japan two of my favourite navy's

Some pictures

I think it would be good for Turkey to get visits on the JMSDF flat decks to get first and experience on how to operate a large LHD

JMSDF is a formidable naval power with decades of experience and ships to match it would greatly benefit Turkey to do joint drills

These are excellent frigates.

IMHO, they are what the US Freedom class should have been.

- 75mm main gun instead of a 57mm.
- Eight LR SSMs (Harpoons) instead of none.
- MK-41 VLS for ESSM instead of none.
- The same RAM missile system with 21 missiles.

The US LCS has a larger flight deck and hanger (two Seahawks instead of one), and the US LCS has a significantly higher top speed.

If the MilGem had a larger hanger, IMHO, it would have been the perfect LCS solution for the US Freedom class.

Here's how the Turkish LCS looks, compared to the Freedom:

They will build eight of these General Purpose vessels, and then four of the more heavily armed anti-air versions.

Maybe you'll get something like that when Japanese will start replacing the Abukuma class Jeff. They would surely appreciate your view on those ships. Yet that's optimum which you always have to cram with the money coming from the budget ;) That's the real battlefield for the navy planners all around the world.

Indeed this ships are top tier naval vessels for Turkey

The programme calls for 8 x Ada Class corvettes in two batches 4+ 4

Thereafter 4 larger and more capable TF100 FFG

This will be followed by the much larger TF2000 FFG with true AAW capability as of now 8 are planned

And to give you idea of size and tonnage TF2000 is intended to be like UK GCS, a large multi role surface combatant highly advanced and heavily armed

Eventually they will form the 8+4 + 8 surface programme

Are the TF-2000 planned then to replace the 8 Perry's?

Well, with 63 Burke DDGs, and plans in place for building another 25. We will have all three Zumwalts...and we have 55 or so SSNs. So, it's hard to complain about relative force levels.

But I believe that the SSC will ultimately be a comparable frigate, even if right now the plans are just a modest upgrade to the LCS.

A new administration with the current House and Senate can quickly fix that...and most probably ensure that at least there is a more modest armament upgrade to the existing LCS.

As it is, both the Freedom class and Independence class will still make very good ASW escrots to any task force.

And the Independence in particular will remain an excellent MCM platform and SpecOps platform too. They just should have been multi-role frigates IMHO.

Turkey is making the most for a GP, multi-role vessel out of the basic hull form and displacement.

Hey Jeff when will you start constructing a scale size model kit on this beauty?:)
