what's wrong with the lid and the hinges? (just asking, from land-locked country :)

If you zoom in the photo it does not look very neat for a supposedly high-tech system. And I was looking closely at it when I was on the 054A. But maybe my quality expectation was too high after getting used to iPhone's and Mac's workmanship lol.

What was interesting was that I was probably the only visitor on the 054A that had any knowledge of what we were looking at. No one else spent a second looking at the HQ-16 VLS, so I could easily get a clean shoot of it. Most people were taking selfies with the 76mm gun and the anti-submarine rocket launcher lol.

was the 054A frigate they were told that's open to the public...and among the few guys that seemed to have some knowledge, they asked the Captain "Are we on a 052C?" "Is that a Phased Array Radar?"o_O

Yeah, the exposed surfaces of VLS are generally pretty simple.
In fact, I find that once you get aboard a ship, all of the systems (whether they're guns, or maybe the covering of a radar) that look nice and sleek from a distance turn out to have big obvious bolts, rough paint, and small parts of light corrosion, that kind of ruins the high tech look. But that's part of the reality of a ship I think.

As for 054A's VLS, I think it is virtually indistinguishable from VLS of other navies, or at least its lid, hinge, and topside cover is. I saw an 054A's VLS at close distance when a PLAN anti piracy group came by a couple years back, and my expectations were more or less met.
