I believe that's actually a water cannon for firefighting. It makes sense to get into some hotspots. They probably have to attach a hose that it drags.

Unit on the left looks to possibly be a MULE, a cargo carrier for troops. Unit in the upper center and right might be a surveillance system for urban. Lower right looks like a clone of pack bot. The treads standing up are meant to flip the bot over and allow it to climb stairs in urban. The lower center looks to have a water cannon, but water cannon on UGVs are more for then just putting out fires, American EOD UGVs use water cannons to disable bombs.

Quality-driven Poisson-guided Autoscanning

2014-08-25

Scanning real physical objects is becoming more and more commonplace. The scanned 3D model is crucial for reverse engineering, 3D printing, industrial design and etc. However, high quality scanning of physical objects remains a meticulous and tedious task. Only a few auto-scanning systems are emerging on the market, which are expensive and unable to scan complex objects.

Researchers of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) presented a novel view planning method for robot-guided auto-scanning system. Unlike previous scan planning methods, they did not aim to minimize the number of scans that needed to cover the object’s surface, but rather to ensure the high quality scanning of the model. They showed that by placing the scanner at strategically selected by Next-Best-View locations, the geometric details of the scanned object were progressively captured toward high fidelity. A patent related to this research has been applied both in China and US, which is expected to benefit the 3D modeling industry.

The research results have been accepted by SIGGRAPH Asia 2014 and will be published also on ACM Transactions on Graphics. This work is supported in part by NSFC, CAS Technology Program, Shenzhen Innovation Program, Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Israel Science Foundation. The research group, led by Prof. HUANG Hui at SIAT, specializes in computer graphics, computer vision and visualization.

World's first 110-inch curved UHD TV unveiled in Europe

There's no denying it, it's a monster. TCL has given its flagship Ultra High Definition television announced at CES back in January a more immersive new bed-fellow in the shape of the 110-inch China Star Curved Ultra-HD TV. The company hasn't offered much in the way of details, but read on for what we do know.

The 110-inch China Star Curved Ultra-HD TV felt more like the display you might find in a small cinema setup rather than something you would expect to see in someone's living room. The 3,840 x 2,160 resolution curved LED display boasts a high image depth that's said to create a "near glasses-free 3D effect" and offers a reflection-free 55 degree field of view from 3 m (10 ft) away.

The inclusion of intelligent backlight technology aims to improve the image by dimming certain areas of the display while keeping others bright for improved overall viewing, and a CMI figure of 400 Hz promises seamless and sharp motion resolution. The high brightness (800 nit) TV is backed by the power of a multi-core processor, offers UHD upscaling and comes with HDMI and USB ports.

Unfortunately, we couldn't persuade the TCL reps at IFA to part with any more details or disclose when we might see this behemoth on the market, or at what price. So for the moment, you'll just have to take our word for it that the new China Star model is rather captivating.

I wonder why they removed the cab on the dangfang? In the US Autonomous program the cab is left mostly untouched. For example Oshkosh trucks M-ATV platform indeed there who current production has been demonstrated autonomously with the cab in tact so that the troops can still be transported and the vehicle used in conventional operations. By eliminating the cab that is no longer a option. This suggests a emphasis on purely unmanned vs manned optional.
As to the other forms the light quad atv has a US equivalent in deployment. The Armored vehicles are interesting, and in the case that the PLA decided to automate a Tank the fact there tanks come with a Automatic loader might offer a advantage in cost savings and ease of conversion.
