Jeeeeeessssuuuuuuuussss! The way you guys are talking this up......I had such high hopes! This is what I saw. Tank stalling going up the smallest incline. Vehicles breaking down in the calmest conditions. Infantry moving in gaggle formation. Clean uniforms. Convoys moving in broad day light with no dispersion. Infantry assaulting across open country without rudimentary knowledge of infantry minor tactics. More clean uniforms. No one breaking a sweat. No sense of urgency. More vehicles moving with no dispersion, and no watching of arcs. No light discipline at night. Rudimentary concealment. More soldiers in gaggle formation. More clean uniforms. Basic fighting positions. Clearing some sort of berm like obstacles with diggers? What? Bridging across a freaking drain ditch! More freaking useless looking commanders posing for cameras in "command posts". More gaggle formation. They move like freaking recruits. This is like week 1 of infantry minor tactic stuff.

How many people here have served? Have you seen what soldiers look like in a real field ex? Have you seen what real war fighters look like? I'll fucking rack march these pansy looking soldiers till they die. I'll drill nothing but pairs fire till they move like they know what they're doing.

I'm actually pissed off. If this is the state of the PLA then nothing's changed except rhetoric.

I only hope that this is posing for the cameras and the real war fighters in the PLA are better operators. China deserves better than this. This is embarrassing. I'm embarrassed.

I think you need to watch some of the videos which provide a lot more information than the pictures do. These exercises may not meet your expectations but they are definitely not just for show. Also don't overestimate the background and baseline these units may well be used to either, during the past decade of modernization the PLA has heavily prioritized the air force and navy over the army so the army is probably a little behind. In terms of them not being dirty enough, this is a dry dusty environment, stuff doesn't stick much.

I don't know how much time your average PLA grunt gets in the field a year. But if you know what you're looking for, "fresh" troops stands out like dog's balls.

Take this guy for example.
That chest rig look straight out of the box. There is a certain look to grunts that has been in the field all their career. Generally, you have two sets of uniforms. Your parade set and your fieldies. The parade set is your nice set. Everything ironed and creased for the parade ground. Then you have your fieldies, the dirty salty pair that you take on your field ex. The buckles and straps on your rigs taped down. Pockets adjusted just the way you like them. Something that looks like it's been on more pack marches than you care to admit.

There's also the way a seasoned war fighter moves. That patrol cradle when moving slowly and delibrately. That quick but not rushed jog to the next position. Knowing exactly where you should be in the advance cause you drilled this a billion times. I'm just not seeing it here in these videos. They runs around like headless chickens in a gaggle. Looking like recruits.

Looking at this guy. I wonder if this is the first time this year he's been on actual field training.

Which leads to my original concerns that these "exercises" are exactly the show pieces that PLA used to run. Look up what kind of training the marines get at 21 Palms. I wonder if the PLA grunts get the same kind of realistic training. If not, why not.

So you're judging an entire PLA base on some videos and looks? Are you even sure these are infantry units or combat support units at all?

He is obviously stressed and exhausted and didn't even get a chance to shave in a week. He is quite clean though. Probably because he spent most of the time in commanding post instead of in the field.

I put this pic as a reply(or a irony) to the Doombreed

First, it's 29 Palms, not 21 Palms. Second, if you compare news footage against news footage, it's has the same effect. Mostly due to cut scenes that last few seconds and you don't get the action. Chinese new clips are worse in this respect, since the cut scenes are very short a 1 or 2 second each to pack more action into a 5 minute news brief. While the American one have clips that about 10 to 20 seconds each.

However, if you watch a full clip, the action looks good and realistic. unfortunately, PLA doesn't allow this sort of access.
