Independent Scotland must embrace migration policy

An INDEPENDENT Scotland would need to embrace migration opportunities to help balance the gulf between the number of working people and a growing ageing population, a think tank has warned.

Scotland’s working age population in 2037 is expected to be 3.5 per cent smaller than it was in 2013 – the largest percentage fall of any UK nation – and well below England, which is due to grow by 5 per cent, according to a report from the International Longevity Centre-UK.

By 2035 the percentage of the population aged over 75 in England and Wales will be 12 per cent, while in Scotland it will be 13 per cent.

The group, which investigates longevity, ageing and population change, warned an ageing population may be “difficult” for an independent Scotland to fund as the average age in Scotland will rise to 43 years in 2037, up from the current age of 41.5 years, putting further financial strain on the welfare system.

“If Scotland does vote ‘Yes’ to independence there could be an opportunity to address the balance in demographics through migration policy that would boost the number of working age people,” said the report.

It said that higher spend per head on elderly care north of the Border would put pressure on finances.

The study found although the average Scottish man currently has a life expectancy at birth of 76 and a woman of 81, the low life expectancies in poverty stricken areas such as some parts of Glasgow, mean that even those who live longer are not likely to be as healthy for that time. As a result, more people would be taken out of the workforce early.

It warned that of the 32 council areas in Scotland, 31 per cent have an average age of onset of disability below 50.

I'm just curious, let's just say IF Scotland vote "YES" for independence are they going to be responsible for their own defense or they planning to rent the UK forces? As we know they will definitely be close allies therefore working their forces together in some ways, but Scotland has to pay for their defenses one way or another if they go independence.

it would be interesting what an independent Scottish military will look like. it would be small but would it follow the UK military in fighting all over the world with the US? or would it choose to be like a Switzerland and be wise to stay out of other peoples war?

I wonder what wold be the relationship between an independent Scotland and NATO ... so a moment ago I did google search, but found nothing conclusive ... I read this:

If yes then Scotland could become one of the Richest parts of Europe. Scotland has the North sea oil which the Brits have been letting sit. If a independent Scottish Government steps up they could open that oil up and crank up the revenues. Part of the pro independence movement is the argument that Scotland should follow Norway's oil model.

the British army at first. The Brits would lease there equipment to the new Scottish armed forces. But as to action. Another of the grudges that the independence movement points to is that Scotland has no say in there troops being deployed. So if they do go it alone then its likely Scottish forces will be more of a case by case then the UK and US.

the Kilt is not unique to Scotland its common across both Britannia and Ireland.

A independent Scotland would likely be grandfathered in to NATO and would start out compliant with all Nato norms... Except maybe there small arms. The British government spec 5.56x45mm used in the L85 rifle tend to be under powered vs true NATO spec.

You forgot United Kingdom of England, WALES & Northern Ireland ...... If there is no Scotland in the UK anymore!
Your quite right. I remembered an hour after my posting that Wales now has a parliament of its own and would be named just as you write.

I found a good video on youtube that explained the different terms used.

This guy also have a bunch of other interesting videos on youtube.
Excellent. Just one remark it might have included: The BBC has a habit of referring to Great Britain as a nation state. :)

be careful, TE, "as a reward for the oil" an independent Scotland would get the share of more than one freaking trillion pounds of the UK National Debt; I tried to quickly find out what that share would be exactly:
