Re: Aircraft Carriers

That is a Boeing concept they have been showing off at every event relating too naval fighters and aviation. here are a few of the other versions I have seen note it's taking a twin engine tailless configuration that looks kinda like a cross between the A12 and F22.

Her's what the A-12, the Avenger II, from the late 80s and early to mid 90s was going to look like before it was canceled.

Re: Aircraft Carriers

to get around the lack of a vertical tail the air craft would have too use some advanced thrust vectoring. presumably Boeing would also be aiming a variant of this concept the Air forces way...

You know every time I see a pic of that A12 I cant help but cringe at how close she looks too the old Horten H.IX

Considering the numbers of American aircraft design engineers who have admitted to having a 'good long look' at the Horten stored in the Smithsonian for inspiration, its hardly surprising there is a resemblance...

Hey, all the talk about Russian designed carriers made me take a closer look at the INS Vikramaditya. I found a few photo's. So what do you guy's make of her ?

INS Vikramaditya is only an interim carrier until the Indian designed and built Vikrant class carrier enters service around 2016. It is likely that Vikramaditya is a one off design

It is almost certainly a one off design, unless India decides to buy one of the kiev class ships (now museums) in china and ask the Russians to refurbish them into what vikramditya is LOL.

Although apparently elements of the admiral gorshkov were carried into the kuznetsov class, so the ship may not be entirely unique... But I digress.

Nice pics.

She's going to be a nice carrier and with a wing or two of Mig-29Ks she'll be very capable.

I believe she will be operational with her airwing before the ex-Varyag because the Indians already have that first wing of Mig-29K and are training with them. When the carrier is finishe and handed over in Dec 2012 after quals,, they will quickly move towards testing and then training with them on deck.

Here's my site for the Vikramaaditya with a bunch more pictures:

It is definitely a one-off, but it will serve in the Indian Navy for many, many years to come IMHO, and so therefore is not really "interim." She will replace the aging Viraat, and then be there as the two new indegenous carriers come on line. Thus, India will have three large deck, carriers going forward.

I believe the 1st indegenous will be STOBAR like the Vikramaditya, but the second indegenous is planned to be CATOBAR to my understanding. We shall see.

Also it should be added the Indian navy has years more experience with aircraft carriers than the PLAN. They have already mastered things China is trying to learn

Exactly right. They have operated carriers for the last several decades and in terms of the mechanics of running them and working with other vessels in fromation, etc, even air ops though most of their experience is with STOVL aircraft in terms of the strike aircraft, they are well ahead in experience.

And they already have the new aircraft...production aircraft...that they are testing with.
