That is a very good video with some really interesting details.

At first, I was struggling to figure out what type of plane they were flying and what the roles of the pilots were, but I think that was more because of my own pre-conceptions about there being distinct pilot and weapons officer roles.

But it seems that this was a MKK unit, and that all pilots train to be able to perform the roles of pilot and weapons officer, and that they often perform either role.

From that, it looks like the PLAAF is paving the way to bring in true multi-role capability on their future single seaters.

The training is focused on the pilots mastering precision strike of targets over 100km away, they showcased a practice where a pilot managed to fly a missile with a 1.3m wingspan in through a 4m wide cave door from over 100km away.

The weapons being used seems to be the KH59, with over 100km range, and 1.3m wingspan even though several KH29s were shown carried on aircraft during interviews.

The gun camera footage is the highlight of this piece, as you can see that the pilots are training under really difficult conditions. For one of the times a shot was judged to have 'missed', the shot was complicated by the placement of smoke generators near the target, and the smoke obscured the target during the final seconds before impact.

They didn't show how much the missile missed the target by, but going from the gun camera footage, it could not have been by much, and may well have still been enough to take out the target in combat conditions.

The strike against the cave is especially impressive because it was a completely realistic target. The cave was just left as it was, with no visual markings or cuing of any kind. The part of the video of that shot being made start at 11'05". Even if you don't speak Chinese, I think that section is worth watch for just the gun camera footage.

There was a split second of external camera shot which captured the missile, I took a screencap of it.

Hard to tell for sure, but it could be a KH59.

I'm confuse by #540 in the original Flanker thread. That thread was closed in 2008 because it became too long. Here we are with a thread more than 1000 longer and a new posting on the old thread.
