re Engine for J20

J20 will eventually have a vector nozzle. There are articles on the web about experiment on ceramic vector nozzle. According to that article it worked. All is left is problem in manufacturing technology.

Re: China's indigenous jet engines, including for J-20, perform within reasonable nor

to count that is useless, AL-31F/FN with 16, J-20 silver nozzle with 16, every body have known this, but J-20 silver nozzle is different out look, it's not AL-31F/FN or WS-10a either.

The engine has two layer of pedals. The internal ones seals the nozzle, controls the size of the airflow. It is a critical component of the engine.

The external ones are for aerodynamics purpose only. It hides the control elements for the internal pedals. We often see F-15 photos with the external pedals removed.

So it is quite easy and safe to create your own external pedals. It won't change the engine performance.

I really wish the J-20 flew with Chinese engines. However, let me repeat - the black and silver nozzles are the same engine (same length, same diameter). The color and shape of the external pedals don't mean a thing.

Between AL-31F and WS-10, I would have to say they are AL-31F due to the pedal count.

However, we cannot remove the slight possibility that they are a different variant of WS-10 - either a modified WS-10A, specifically for J-20, or WS-10G.

Wrong, WS-10 only one layer of blades for exterior, two layer of blades for interior. but AL-31F with two layer of blades for each exterior and interior, if they create one more layer of blades on AL-31F, people will easy to find out from the photos of J-20 engine nozzel.
if you mean create the exterior pedals means replace, AL-31F and F-15 engine are different, many people know that F-15 engine is speacial design for exterior layer remove, but Al-31 is not, and you need to tell us what reason China to do so, I had read some body said like you, but most of people doubt this opinion.
I see so many forums, so many people (include many engine expert) can not make the conclusion, I think you don't research very much about J-20 engine nozzle.
I have watched the photos for engine nozzle of AL-31f, WS-10a, J-20, I caunted how many blades they are, I times and times to watch the photos of engine nozzle of J-20, I would not make any conclusion.
time will tell, don't conclude so easy just by your guess.
there were many opinion for J-20 engine before it's maiden flight, until now, we only can say it's " unknow" engine.

A new talk show on Hong Kong's Phoenix network about the J-20. THis show is very interesting because:
1) They invited military experts from the mainland, Taiwan, and Singapore.
2) The guy who did the "broad cast" when J-20 first flew was invited as well.
3) The Taiwanese military expert (a former military man, I believe) thought that the military balance has shifted completely in the mainland's favor. He was extremely pro-PRC lol.
4) They got an American guy who could speak Chinese to talk at the end.

I just watched that Phoenix TV talk show " Tigar Talk", I am interesting in the fanboy Huangyun 黄运 who lives in Chengdu, he closely saw J-20 maiden flight, I use to read his post in CD, his use name 禁止双弓.
I think all the invited guests talk in the show quite fair, but some one who lives in Moscow had visited Russian experts, I found those Russian always feel sour.

Yeah I also found it funny how the Taiwanese expert was more optmistic about the J-20 than most mainland expert.

J-20 matches F-22 in front-profile and may exceed F-22 in side-profile stealth

j20f22.jpg

Left-half of picture is China's J-20. Right half is U.S. F-22.
(Note the J-20 air-inlet has been better integrated into the fuselage than the F-22's gap between the air-inlet and fuselage.)

I have two observations. Firstly, as shown in the spliced-photo above, I believe that I have been proven correct that the J-20 matches the F-22's frontal profile in stealth design.

50211b93-619e-482a-b9a9-aeff0a7e3333.jpg

Above: Picture of sleek J-20 with small tailfins.
Below: Picture of sleek F-22 with large tailfins.

Secondly, the F-22 may have tailfins that are significantly larger than the J-20. Given the increased surface area to reflect radar, this raises the possibility that the F-22 may have a higher side-profile stealth signature than the J-20 and is more vulnerable to bi-static or multistatic radar systems.

Note: Thank you to HouShanghai for the photographs.
