Anyone else tried counting the number of petals for the silver nozzle. I counted them to be one petal less than the black nozzle. Can't really confirm it, though, without close-up pictures of the nozzles

The current nozzle arrangement on the J-20 has two rings of saw tooth edges (neither of which appeared on the AL-31F).

Edit: the AL-31F had serrated edges where it came out of the fuselage, but the petals on the nozzle in the WS-1X J-20 seem to have gaps in between (unless the edges were painted black).

Regarding the still mysterious engine debate, I'm no longer sure about a second prototype + diffent engines !

As such the darker engine shown is clearly an AL-31F/FN … IMO we could end this debate here … but regarding the lighter one it is still a mystery. I won’t repeat my concerns why I still don’t think it is a simple painted AL-31F/FN, but otherwise I have to admit, that many details - especially the innere structure - do match that powerplant and clearly speak against the WS-10A or even an uprated Kai, G, bis, PLUS or whatever You like to call it.

Therefore my current conclusion – even one I don’t like to accept – is:
This is more likely a specialized or special-treated (painted) AL-31F/FN than a WS-10A.

I can not accept any opinion about the J-20 with silve engines were the coating cover AL-31F/FN, the engine should be original metal color,I think nothing can coated over the engine while it operate in such high temperature, also I think such coating could be danger for engine opertion.
maybe any engineer in our forum can point out which car engine is coated over? then I would accept that opinion.

Where does PLAAF get these AL-31F's? Do the numbers of J-10 that we see fit the number of AL-31F purchased?

Could these AL-31F's be made entirely in China? Could the "maintenance" breakthrough for engines really be a "reverse engineering" breakthrough? After all, the AL-31F can already be modified for longer life in China. So if a Chinese manufacturer can make the monocrystalline fan blades, then there is no need for any physical Russian input -- everything can be made in China.

I am leaning more and more toward this conclusion.... J-10 may have been running on domestic engine for a lot longer than we all thought.

can China manufacture monocrystaline blade? the answer is yes, the latest gen. of monocrytalline blade is DD-4.the blade enter production in the early 90's (Or it was late 80's?not sure).
other technology mention is using titanium blade with carbon to carbon coating (?) the entire blade then "cook" in a high temperature oven to solidified.technology developed Tsinghua university.

The monocrystalline blades are turbine blades, operation at high temperature, rather than fan blades.

Taking this into consideration it shouldn't be too much of an issue then to establish a full-scale mass-production line for the AL-31s if necessary.

I don't think the nozzles are coated with anything. But I do believe that perhaps AL-31F nozzle was removed and a stealth nozzle attached.

The notion that China can greatly improve the lifespan of the AL-31F, seems to me that perhaps they could produce copies on their own....? But then...why WS-10?

To be honest, I don't really see how the inner structure of the AL-31F is anymore similar to that of the J-20's engine (the silver nozzle one) anymore than the WS-10A's inner structure.
