Could You please tell us, what the four "****" are for ???

the four characters are : 'f' 'y' 'j' 's'

My Google Chrome throws a big malware warning when I try to goto that site. I have to confirm that I want to proceed. I think this malware threat is the reason it gets censored off by BBS.

Anyone else tried counting the number of petals for the silver nozzle. I counted them to be one petal less than the black nozzle. Can't really confirm it, though, without close-up pictures of the nozzles

I read this news long time ago but didn't bother to post it. they even show the plant with clean and immaculate floor. This is really remarkable achievement doubling the service life from 900 hr to 1500hr

China makes modifications to Russian Salyut AL-31F jet engine

Reuben F Johnson JDW Correspondent - Kiev

Key Points
The PLAAF has developed its own upgrade for the Russian-made Salyut AL-31F jet engine

The development demonstrates that the Chinese have achieved near autonomy in supporting their fighters' Russian-made engines

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has developed its own service life extension modifications for the Russian-made Salyut AL-31F engine, a Moscow-based defence and foreign policy think-tank has reported.

The modifications to the AL-31F/FN P.2 series engine increase its operational limits by more than 65 per cent - from 900 to 1,500 flight hours, according to the privately owned Centre for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST).

The AL-31F engine is the powerplant for several types of aircraft in the PLAAF inventory: the Sukhoi Su-27 (which is also licence-produced at the Shenyang Aircraft Works as the J-11), the Su-30MKK and the Chengdu Aerospace Corporation J-10. The AL-31FN is a special derivative of the original AL-31F design that was developed by the Salyut plant in Moscow for a single-engine application to be fitted to the J-10.

The service life modifications were reportedly developed at the PLAAF Overhaul Plant Number 5719. The key to the service life extension is a specific set of improved, Chinese-made components that are part of what is described as a "re-manufacturing kit" that is introduced during the process of a full-scale remanufacturing and overhaul process.

The plant is located near the city of Chengdu in Sichuan province, employs 2,000 personnel and is reported to be a model of innovation within the PLAAF's network of repair plants. During the past several years the facility has initiated 63 different research and development programmes and has been awarded more than 20 state prizes for achievements in technological innovation. In the same time period, the plant's assets have more than doubled from CNY1.1 billion (USD147.2 million) in 2004 to CNY2.9 billion today.

The plant's officials credit the success of their overhaul process to a decision taken in 2004, when some of the first AL-31F engines were presented to the plant by the PLAAF for overhaul. A decision was taken, according to the Chinese news sources originally cited, to completely reorganise the overhaul process. This streamlining of the overhaul disassembly and servicing line resulted in a 27.3 per cent decrease in the time required to complete an overhaul and increased the plant's production capacity by 60 per cent.

This level of improvement in the engine's design demonstrates that the Chinese have achieved near autonomy in the support of these Russian-made engines. Russian specialists who spoke to Jane's state that this is "another example of how the technology sold to the Chinese during the 1990s has now been fully assimilated by them. It is only a matter of time before the engines that China produces will be as good as or better than anything designed here in Russia".

Interesting.

On Jan 6th, a Chinese engine expert (Mr. Gan) has been honored by President Hu. Some people have googled his name. His field is mainly in maintenance, not development.

Maybe that was his contribution?

I'm sorry, it's "****".

It seems like this forum has been programmed to disable other websites's links automatically.

edit for: Would somebody kindly tell me if "f" "y" "j" "s" or any letters were taboo in this forum?

Then there is only one type of engine on j-20 (and likely only one prototype) and chinese officials likely painted the nozzles in order to confund the observers and give an ideia that j-20 first flight was with domestic engines ???

The J-20 is just a demonstrator not a prototype. I think this demonstrator is just for PLAAF testing how stealthy the aerodynamic design of the plane is, since PLAAF hasn't any experience on flying stealth planes. The plane doesn't need to fly ultrasonically, so even the thrust of two AL-31s' is sufficient.

I believe the plane was covered by some kind of microwave absorber for the test and that's why we can not see any rivets on its surface, so it will be reasonable if they get some microwave or infrared absorber over the nozzles. I think they just want to get the plane in the air and use their ground-based and airborne radars testing its stealthy efficiency.

Theoretically they could also use Taihang for maiden flight. But obviously a AL-31 is maturer than a Taihang even if Taihang has been flown with J-11 for years(2 or 3 years?). The demonstrator is so important and precious, so they have chosen the safest way they think to power the plane.

I don't think the purpose of Chinese government or PLAAF is to confuse foreign observers and Chinese fanboys. They just don't explain it becasue they don't need fanboys' votes---this is the political stealthy advantage of dic*****ship comparing with democracy.;)

I don't think it is the evidence of Taihang's incompetence. It's just some precaution. It's wise to test the plane with two AL-31s and the WS-10G(if this is its name) with a J-11 first. Once the plane and the engine are maturer, they will combine them together. They have already used this method on the J-15's prototype just as we have seen in the video.

My IE8 and McAfee didn't report anything, and when I google the website, there is no malware warning under the links given by Google.

I think so.

He is hired by PLAAF not a engine company, so he is no way to play a role in developing a new engine. His contribution is supposed to on maintaining those engines already in service.

Hey maya, what about all that stuff on cd a while ago about WP-14 been abandonned? It seemed like a pretty recent thing.

Honestly, I don't think maya could confirmedly know if the photo was shot at the same time when the article was written. (If I was wrong, I would appologize to him and everyone.)

Anyway, I agree his conclusion. There is no way that Chinese have abandoned the engine after they had spent billions yuan to develope and test it.
