According to him (i saw it on google news aggregate), apparently every civilian leader appeared surprised when he brought up the topic of the new plane. As gates put it, it appeared as though they had no knowledge about the plane (including hu jinto).

Obviously President Hu knew about as did most of the top political leaders. I would guess they were on strict orders to not talk about it since it is officially classified and had no choice but to play dumb. The Chinese government is famous for its strict protocol.

To your credit though, there is a precedent for this. Remember when China shot down a satellite in 2007? The military and Foreign Ministry were not on the same page because at first the Foreign Ministry denied it even took place, even though it was obvious the West was going to find out. I think the FM lost some face there when they had to admit it happened a few days later and defend it.

Regarding the timing of Gates' visit, the best guess I have read on this thread is that it is an attempt to show Gates that China's weapons development is more or less transparent. Military transparency has been a common concern for Gates who has criticized China on it specifically several times.

Regarding the engines, why do jet engine nozzles vary the diameter of their opening throughout flight?

Merely pre-flight checks, make sure the control surface in respond to the control input by the pilot.

Gates is bullshitting / the answer was lost in the translation/ all Chinese leaders were just having fun with gates?

The actual suggestion that chinese government did not know what the military was doing is quite absurd since there was reported to the some high level officials present at the take off. Also, the award to the engine designer is also a kinda give away.

So did gates just misunderstood (perhaps deliberately)?

I don't know how you read that but by my understand of the article, is just that the Chinese leaders didn't bring up the topic until the US press for it. Unless the question was brought up in morning meetings, the leaders would already knew by then.

Anyway, by doing so China can be seen as not "show off-ish", yet knowing the US get the message.

Its part of the pre flight checks and would be considered standard practice

Oh, no wonder in the video the co-flying J10 also did this too.....it's really interesting to see those wings flips like that, like an athlete doing warm-up before a run.^^

I still can't figure out where the weapons' bay is even with a clear view of the bottom of the plane. Can someone help me figure out its location?
