cognitive dominance is when you can just drop some ~~~words~~~ out your rear end and everyone else would fight tooth and nail in the mud over what it might mean...
the objective of buzzspeak is always whatever makes your product look the best. if you even think about 5thgen-this-or-that you start engaging with marketing objectives, not engineering objectives. don't promote lockheed's little marketing schtick because it isn't even real. they made it up, they get to change it whenever they want to. again: don't make an appeal to authority by referring to the marketer.

try this one simple trick that renders it useless: refuse to even engage with it. wasnt there a presentation earlier in this thread where the designer was like "americans come up with a bajillion names for their stuff but it's really just XYZ?" take a page out of the chinese playbook and cut out the bullshit. is it a cleansheet design with significant improvements in capability? ok name the specifics and just say that.

if we're lapsing into semantic fights its a sure sign that we dont know how the supercruise efficiency of chinese engines stacks up against american engines. the conversation stops at the words 'we don't know.'

Some speculation on X that these may be AL31 powered models permanently transferred to 99th (making it a mixed unit with J-16), but no evidence that this iosn't a temporary detachment either.
You can’t tell based on satellite imagery. Like you said it could very well be a rapid dragon deployment. China has done it in 2020 when things were getting spicy.

Well, it is indeed a hint, but 7 J-20 in Tibet alone on a single image is IMO more a deployment than proof for a permanent re-equipment!

The odd part is that they're describing this as 7 J-20s in this picture at Hotan but there are 8...

Not that it necessarily matters. To be fair the article didn't describe their presence at those bases as permanent basing/equipment at those specific air fields.

Ultimately these J-20s at Hotan and Damxung are likely just forward deployments from the WTC's 111th and 97th brigades that have J-20s, and while it's probably useful for the PLAAF to routinely and rotationally deploy some to these bases closer to the border with India, they are ultimately a small fraction of the overall WTC J-20 fleet size (let alone overall PLAAF J-20 fleet size).

In the longer term as there are more 5th gen aircraft in the PLA overall, the WTC will have more 5th gens overall and more 5th gens mean more forward deployed 5th gens closer to the border with India even if the percentage/fraction of "forward deployment" remains the same.

Yes, but there are also other like Hurin who rate this already as likely being from the 99th ... and if Monkey King is right, it could indeed be.

But again and as such I agree with you, it is IMO more likely a temporary deployment.
