Penetration of DVP88 should be 3.5mm A3 steel at 1000m

But the caliber choice need to be in relation to the doctrine. Just because US was fighting without artillery in Afghanistan and needed 7.62x51 don't mean China need it. China have everything from 35mm grenade launcers and light HMG for that distance to mortars and artillery.

Don't really hear complaints from Ukraine that rifle lack range but they need more artillery shells and drones.

The SS109 outperforming the DBP87 in short ranges is unsurprising. It has a similar weight and energy despite being less slender and having a smaller diameter. In longer ranges its worse drag catches up to it. The DBP10 though should be a completely different matter. It is basically an armor piercing bullet by NATO standards -for having a steel rod core- while being significantly heavier and more energetic than the DBP87. By now the comparison should be the EPR rounds too. The EPRs' legality could be debated for its tip being outside the jacket but the international law is a meme at this point.

On doctrine part, I disagree. In a close range combat in a build up area, wall penetration is very important. Because cover > concealment > suppression. Having a reasonable penetration denies a lot of the cover. Like many people I too think the US overcorrected with that 6.8 mm but I also believe China too uplifting the penetration quality of its standard issue bullet isn't for nothing.
