China's first experimental device for the suspension combustion of single-particle energetic materials has been completed, providing precise microscopic observation methods for research on explosives and other materials.

According to a report in Science and Technology Daily today, China's first experimental device for the suspension combustion of single-particle energetic materials has been completed and successfully passed the final acceptance review of the National Major Scientific Instrument Development Project . This means that China now possesses safe and precise experimental methods for studying the fundamental characteristics and scientific issues of energetic material combustion.

Energetic materials are substances that, under external stimuli, rapidly release a large amount of energy and perform work within a very short time, such as explosives, pyrotechnic agents, and rocket propellants . Combustion of energetic materials is commonly observed in rocket propulsion, gun and artillery projectile launches, and fireworks displays. Previously, academic research on the combustion of energetic materials was limited to the macroscopic level, focusing on the oxidation and combustion processes of numerous particle clusters, lacking experimental setups for the microscopic combustion of individual particles. However, single-particle combustion research can eliminate inter-particle interference and is fundamental to understanding the combustion of energetic materials under complex operating conditions.

The newly constructed experimental device achieved several technological breakthroughs, including non-destructive stable levitation, reliable ignition, and in-situ high-resolution observation of multiple parameters. The research team used a laser as a pair of "tweezers" to effortlessly pick up an energetic material, suspending this tiny sphere—smaller than the diameter of a human hair—stable in the air. They then used the energy contained in another laser beam to ignite it. Finally, the team installed various observation instruments on the device, providing researchers with comprehensive, multi-parameter data on the combustion of the sphere, temperature changes, and reaction products.

China's first supercritical carbon dioxide geothermal energy extraction project has officially commenced operation in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, marking a new breakthrough in the efficient development and utilization of geothermal energy.

Unlike traditional geothermal energy extraction methods, this project uses supercritical carbon dioxide instead of water as the heat transfer medium, resulting in higher heat extraction efficiency. Furthermore, it ensures clean and safe heat extraction by eliminating the need for groundwater extraction and preventing soil contamination throughout the entire process.

After commissioning, the project can meet the centralized heating needs of over 18,000 square meters of residential housing in winter, replacing approximately 288 tons of standard coal annually and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 750 tons.

CAS discovered major heavy rare earth mining bed in northeast in Heilongjiang and Jilin region. This northern type is formed naturally through freeze-thaw process and is ceahper and more enivronmentally friendly to process than the southern discoveries of the 离子吸附型/ion-adsorption-type clay.

Coal-rock gas is increasingly an alternative to shale gas. Also extracted via fracking, though costs still need to drop to improve viability.

State energy giant PetroChina's experts forecast the company could produce 30 billion cubic metres (1.06 trillion cubic feet) of coal rock gas by 2035, topping last year's record shale gas output, which made up 10% of the country's production.

That success spawned a drilling campaign leading to the assessment that China's 14 coal basins hold 13 trillion cubic metres (tcm) of technically recoverable reserves in rocks up to 6,000 ‌metres deep, according to a China National Petroleum Corp seminar presentation in 2025 in Beijing reviewed by Reuters. CNPC is PetroChina's parent company. By the end of last year, China had drilled more than 700 coal rock gas wells and produced 4.2 bcm of gas in 2025, mostly from Daji. "China is the first and only country that's commercially developing CRG due to the country's unique geology as its traditional coal seam gas development hits a ceiling," Zhang Junfeng, a senior geologist at CNPC's Exploration and Development Institute, told Reuters.
