If we learn from Ukraine and Iran war, I think we must be wary of a new weapons in new type of warfare. Namely drones and himars. Specially when china may face against taiwan that has only about 100 to 200 miles taiwan strait. For the most immediate problem is to develop weapon that can protect ships and ports from those two type of attack. It will be funny if china type 055 got hit by a sea drone when it stay at the port in hongkong or hainan isle.

So i think rather than a DDG, it would be better if china can develop a new type 022 boat with a combat designation as anti drone drone. Or anti drone ship and anti short range missile ship that can protect strategic ports near taiwan in 24/7 hours. This ship can also be the escort of a DDG when it sail in a strait. Like taiwan strait and malaka strait.

So when make a new DDG maybe they can add a dock like type 071 that can bring 1 or 2 of this small boats inside and operate them when the DDG come into a narrow strait.

Drone defence will be comprised of defensive EW, laser weapons and interceptor drones. All of these will be mounted on existing ships, on bases and at ports.

True. But why US aircraft carrier chose to stay at 1000 km from iran? If we talk about AD, they are already the most advanced if not the best in the world. This small ship can act as escort. The first line defence against the enemy in an asymmetry warfare. Even if it lost, its okay. Its cheap. Also it has better maneuverability compared to big ships in a narrow sea like in the strait. It can also be act as an early warning detection against an ambush. When it meet the enemy sea drone, suicide drone or long range rocket, it can transmite a signal to the big ship or the port, when it also try to eliminate the danger by its oen weapon. So it can decrease the risk for a DDG of FRG from gotten humiliated like in Russia. Plus it will be better if it is unmanned, anti drone drone. It can patrol around the port in 24/7 when the bigger ship is docking at the port and getting supplied or repaired. Of course even with it, we dont neglect the anti drone system from being installed at the port and a DDG. So they can form a layered anti drone defense against any ambush.

Drones can come from anywhere and I assume the more advanced attack models can change their flight path. So you'll need too many picket boats to cover all directions. Easier to fit point defence drone defence on all major assets.

That said, I could still imagine coastal air defense barges to defend major civilian centers and ports. Given past precedence in Iran, I don't think US and allies are above attacking civilian centers and facilities to try and do as much damage economically as possible.

How is this post relevant to the thread?

Talking about defense against things like drones is immaterial to the thread title of next generation surface combatants, because the threat of drones and/or operating in the Taiwan strait, does not preclude the fact that navies will still require high end blue water capable surface combatants.

Firstly, LOL.

Laser defense and interceptor drones are emerging technologies- laser defense is still in early trial phase with USN, equipped by only a handful of destroyers, and no known interceptor drones have been seen deployed on the warships of any navy yet. EW will not be effective against all drone types.

The primary strength of USN AD is that of its interceptor missiles- which is too expensive and wont scale for anti-drone defense.

One thing is sure… future warships will have more AA guns and lasers to defend them from drones. Most modern warships, except Italians with their 76mm all over, don’t have nearly enough defence against new threats posed by possible saturations attacks by drones. Italy’s next gen destoyers will have 4x76mm guns.

30 - 40mm autocannons probably work just as well against drone attacks.
