Nah, the West at the beginning was even supportive of the revolution. Jimmy Carter back then asked the Iranian army to back off in favor of Khomeini when they wanted to stage a coup. Khomeini who famously said „economics is for donkeys“. The regime is extremely corrupt and mismanaged the economy to the greatest extent possible. The water crisis for example was done entirely by themselves.
