I wonder if the integration works allowed Eyrie Eye to guide the PL-15E's via datalink. Some wild conjectures:

1, Indian pilots assumed they were in safe distance given their experience with amraam yet unaware of PL-15E capabilities.

2, PL-15E's were guided by datalink and no fire control lock, Indian pilots were oblivious until missile went pitbull. If they had awac support their awac should be able to warn them of approaching missiles, but then it is possible awacs were under EW suppression.

3, It is possible both J-10CE radar and PL-15E seeker are using some sort of LPI mode that the French avionic suit were not able to pick up on.

Whatever the real scenarios were this event is a treasure trove for both Chinese and western intelligence. I won't worry about it leaking Chinese capabilities too much though as things changes so fast in the electronics front whatever intel gathered would be obsolete in the next conflict
To add to your theory, the IAF AWACS might have been able to pick up the missile launches. But as they don't have high speed datalinks, they cannot warn the fighters effectively on time, which led to a bunch of planes shot down

Is this really unexploded?

No. The guidance, battery and payload are gone.

This is another PSA to always be wary when looking at these sort of "rankings".

If we use Chinese liberal logic of “real life combat” then we will get a fun tier list. It will be J-10C > F-15J > F-15A > F-15C > F-16A > F-16C > Su-35 > Su-30SM > Su-27 >>> all the other losers with no fourth gen kills.

It may also be that the Rafale pilots have done their best. The unexploded missile is the result of success and we all know the result of failure.

Imagine it turns out some Indian general let the air force plans mess up so his AVIC stocks would go up.

Or better yet, institutional investors have large AVIC stocks so they bribed Indian generals to go ahead with that disastrous plan.

Remember when there is high corruption, anything is on the table.
You are so right: "How thoughtless of us not to think about how the defeat of the IAF and the destruction of Dassault's reputation would have on some Indian generals' stock holdings, how insensitive of us"-borrowed/paraphrased from Star Trek DS9(Quark-Garak having a drink)

Yeah, I translated that one. My theory was that by controlling the time between successful firing of the pulses you can extend or reduce the range. If there is no gap between the pulses then it is just a single pulse motor. My current hypothesis is that there is no physical difference between the E variant and the domestic variant, only a software timer that can be programmed by the flight computer. It is entirely possible that China removed restrictions before the fight.

Can they adjust the timing mid-flight? i.e., fly slower over friendly, residential, or non-combat areas?
