More good news

First Squadron of JF-17 Thunder inducted in PAF

ISLAMABAD, Feb 18 (APP): Another major milestone was achieved when the first Squadron of JF-17 Thunder formally joined fighter aircraft fleet of Pakistan Air Force on Thursday. A ceremony for the formal induction of JF-17 Thunder aircraft was held at one of the PAF’s operational bases. Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force was chief guest on the occasion.

The Chief of the Air Staff addressing the Airmen congratulated the nation and the PAF personnel on the momentous occasion.
“The formal induction of JF-17 aircraft in the PAF is in line with our resolve to face all challenges with poise and self-confidence. The PAF has invested in the force multipliers like the Air-to-Air refuellers, UAVs and AEW&C aircraft to enhance our capacity and capability to undertake complex operations,” he said.

“ These new state-of-the-art inductions make it imperative that we train hard and prepare well to induct and integrate the new systems professionally and safely. The achievements of PAF leave no doubt in my mind that we are immensely capable and, as a team, can set and achieve still higher standards”.

“We are a peaceful nation with no aggressive designs and want to maintain peace with honour in our region. We are inducting new systems to keep pace with technology and maintain credible conventional balance of force, without which peace cannot be ensured in South Asia,” he said.

He said that the JF-17 would be put through its paces in the forthcoming Exercise Hi-Mark 2010.

The ‘JF-17 Thunder’ has the capability to undertake entire spectrum of offensive as well as defensive missions. By joining the elite ranks of PAF, the JF-17 would not only enhance the combat readiness of PAF but also form its back-bone in future.

The ceremony culminated when an A-5-III fighter led three JF-17 Thunder aircraft in a flypast following which a single JF-17 performed aerobatics over the venue.

Egypt mulls JF-17 co-production and signs for more F-16s

Mohammed Najib JDW Correspondent - Ramallah

Cairo is in talks with Pakistan to begin joint production of JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft, Jane's understands from Egyptian defence industry sources.

Even as the talks continued regarding JF-17 assembly in Egypt, however, the US Department of Defense announced on 2 March that an initial contract worth some USD213 million had been finalised with Lockheed Martin for Egypt's procurement of additional F-16C/D multirole fighters.

If the deal for the single-engine JF-17 is approved, Egypt would become the first export client for the aircraft. The Pakistan Air Force formally inducted the type into service in February. Chengdu Aircraft Industries Group, a subsidiary of the state-owned China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC), began development of the aircraft in 1991, with Pakistan joining the programme in 1995. The first aircraft to be manufactured at the Pakistani Aeronautical Complex (PAC) was rolled out on 24 November 2009.

While the number of aircraft Egypt plans to acquire has not been revealed, the inclusion of local assembly in the deal suggests that the contract would be for at least 48 JF-17s.

Brigadier General Mohammed Abdul Azim, a senior official at the government-owned Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI), told Jane's on 3 March that negotiations were continuing and that a final contract announcement was not expected for several weeks.

The project has, however, been plagued by financial and technological obstacles, due in large part to Egypt's insistence that production take place in the country, one senior Arab defence source told Jane's .

The contract with Lockheed Martin, meanwhile, is being handled by the US Air Force under the Foreign Military Sales programme; 20 F-16C/D Block 52 multirole fighter aircraft are to be acquired.

The US Congress was first notified of the F-16 deal in October 2009, with the proposed package including advanced targeting and reconnaissance pods. While the number of aircraft included in the sale has decreased from 24 to 20, the value of the programme will also decrease from an initial cost estimate of USD3.2 billion.

Egypt's new acquisitions would substantially modernise and update its ageing inventory and allow the air force to begin replacing its F-4E Phantom, F-7B, Mirage 5 and MiG-21 combat aircraft.

Modernisation has been the watchword for all of Egypt's services for the last decade, as procurement and upgrades have taken a backseat to increasing the size and capabilities of the infantry force.

Any joint venture would involve Egyptian assembly and manufacturing, in line with rules dictating partnerships that were laid out with the establishment of AOI in 1975. AOI has already indigenously produced Chinese K-8E Karakoram jet trainers.

These new partnership avenues are being spurred on by regional security concerns, including Iran's nuclear programme and piracy threats to merchant marine traffic transiting the Suez Canal.

Lieutenant General Hamdi Wahiba, the director of AOI, said in comments to the official Middle East News Agency that Egypt was also investigating domestic production of an unmanned aerial vehicle. However, he declined to elaborate on the size, type and payload capabilities of the proposed drone.

not too unexpected really. I was expecting China to export assembly lines + some form of ToT to Egypt for a while now. I'm guessing this is also a possibility with other sales. Seems like JF-17 is pretty much geared at K-8 countries.

Interesting part with UAV, I think there are certainly a lot of UAV models that China could also to Egypt. Maybe it already is a customer of CH-3.

Well, I did expect it. And I am not suprised. There are some hidden motives. I doubt the 48 is correct. You do not setup that for just 48 aircraft. In 4 years you can close the factory...

^^ typical fanboy stuff or some credible rumor to it?

like everything else he posts, there are no credibility behind these stories. Although, I am waiting to see what kind of changes they are planning on JF-17.

Re: JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread 2009

I have to agree wirh Meanbird and Tphuang. Reducing RCS by using paint, absorbing material or panels design... Possible. The Bison (Upgraded IAF Mig21Bis) has some of it. F16's have it. So why not adding some ideas to JF17. But I doubt they have a stealth version in mind. It needs totally new concept to go to that result.

We have to see first and personally I think J10B will have more of that then the cheaper medium/low tech brother. Everything comes with a price. As long you do not have internal weapons and huge fuel (2 engines, AESA etc etc) you just dream about it. JF17 certainly not falls in that category...

Re: JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread 2009

Which I still stand by my statement JF-17, the purpose of the fighter is mean't to be cheap mass produce fighter. Aimed as low cost solution to replace large obsolete forces, and also an alternate source of fighters as to Western and Russian fighters. If its a stealth variant then the price will increase, so will the level in maintanance, complexity of operation. Which no longer meets the whole purpose of the JF-17. In which the J-10 will be far a more suitable platform to choose over, since it already as over 6 years of in service flight performance proving to be the PLAAF top dog fighter platform.
