This pocket-sized patient is no silly sausage when it comes to his latest ride. Ralph, a six-year-old dachshund, was given a new set of wheels this month after a long and painful battle with intervertebral disc disease, a genetic spinal disorder. Owners Carmel and Cameron Nall have spent more than £5,500 nursing their beloved pup through surgeries and rehabilitation after he lost all movement and feeling in his hind legs last September. "He is my baby and you would never give up on your child, so we just did what we had to do," Ms Nall said. Ralph's wheels do not slow him down in the slightest, especially when there is a game of fetch to be played. "He's such a high-spirited little dog, and he loves playing ball," she said. "He thinks he's completely normal. "He has movement and feeling back in his legs, which gives us hope that one day he will walk again."

This antelope cheated death by escaping the clutches of a hungry cheetah - even though the fearsome predator had sunk his claws into its flank. The adult hartebeest was grazing when the cheetah - after slowly stalking closer to its prey - chased after the grassland antelope. The spotted predator was able to sink its claws into the fully-grown hartebeest before it lost its grip and the animal made its lucky escape
