Sincerely, I think that time for acting as "poor and weak" China has passed or is about to pass every moment now. China is allmost superpower ( and will certainly be a superpower within a decade ), so you can't fool anyone with that story anymore. And frankly, no need for that anyway.
I agree that still isn't the time for full blown confrontation with the US ( from Chinese perspective ), but in a decade or so, it will. And everybody knows that.
At the end, those who are against China ( Japan, India, Vietnam etc. ) will be on US side, not because they like them, but because it's in their interest. Same thing for those on Chinese side.

Meanwhile, China can play "good superpower" role ( superpower that don't makes invasions of other countries, don't steals their oil, superpower that helps poor countries in Africa etc. ). That should be enough.

I agree that the time is past for China to act poor and weak.

Over the summer, apparently every member of the national security council was given a copy of "Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides's Trap?"

One of the things it points out is that China is already larger than the USA in many respects.

In addition, I don't see any rush to force any issues. In 10 years time, China will still be comparatively poor and should still be growing much faster than the US. So China can afford to wait another 25 years until it becomes a fully hitech and wealthy country some 3x larger than the USA.

So there shouldn't be any need for a war.

Thucydides trap does not apply so much to modern nuclear powers. The whole concept is that the presiding superpower would seek to destroy the rising one at virtually any cost short of its own destruction to continue its dominance. But in the world of modern warfare where the rising power has already achieved MAD with the presiding power, the threat of Thucydides' trap is greatly mitigated. Of course that won't stop the presiding power from trying its best to hinder its rival's rise, as we see...

Agree with your post; there is no rush in Beijing as time is very much on China's side. If anyone feels the need to rush, it's Washington, but there doesn't seem to be a clear direction to rush towards.

The first decent perspective from the back.

Anyone noticed the extrusion on the sides of the helo hanger section? Tough to tell if that's just scaffolding or something more. But it looks like to be where the unidentified panel used to be.

Edit: now that I gave it a second look, it does appear to be scaffolding.

Gotta ask again, but where are the anti ship missiles gonna go? Have they all been converted to vls?

According to Chinese media, the VLS dimensions are a bit larger than that of the American Mark 41 VLS system so China can fit larger missiles. Perhaps that is why the ship has 112 missiles, keep in mind that modern US and Chinese VLS can quad pack so 112 is not bad at all. An inventory of 112 missiles that can shoot longer and hit harder is more important to China at this point. Combined with modern Chinese anti-air, anti-ship and cruise missiles, the 055 is a fearsome warship and a hull that the PLAN can develop on like the 052 hull.

If they tear down the step deck but it houses the air vents or intakes. And yeah the perspective blows but I don't think it was on purpose. What do censors get when the hull's out in the open for all sats to see?

Found a side view of the 055 during construction. It gives a idea of the shape of the ship's superstructure just forward of the aft cell area.

If you don't mind me adding to your drawing, it shows the likely size of the aft vls cell area. 055-4a.jpg

LOL I like being puzzled:

be sure to tell me what's the point though

128... :D
the superstructure is more wider then the vls, so from this angle the superstructure was covered more space behind it, dmmm drawing new yellow line under the blue line, :rolleyes:if we asumpting the line is the same elevation with the vls and the superstructure aft wall is straight without anything protrude to the vls , so it is enough space for 1row or more...
