According to Wiki (yes I know) the Thales SMART-L after a software upgrade can detect ballistic missiles within a range of a 1,000km... so could be handy to have it no?

I mean an L-band radar would be complementary to the four AESA panels right?

The chance of a lower frequency band VSR like the SMART-L making an appearance on the 055 is just about zero at this point. The Wuhan mockup has been right in every single point of contention thus far so there is no reason to think that the little radar that was seen on the mockup will somehow be replaced by some giant search radar that nobody has ever seen before.

Interesting

Type 055 the true air defence unit

It will defend itself, a formation or a land mark and with the right electronics all simultaneously

It has a heavy load and can go fast

Good carrier escort

Beside having more missiles per ship, I am still not clear on how 055 are better air defense units than 052D

It is possible 055's combat management and sensory suite is better than 052D, but that can not be apparently from the outside.

Well, I believe having more missiles is one good thing for them...they can last longer and take on more attacker.

we also have to infer that the sensor suite is better, and that the radars might be more powerful. Larger ship, heavier displacement, means they are going to put bigger and more powerful units in there most prbably.

It will, IMHO, be the most effective combatant the PLAN has and will be used accordingly particularly for coordinating defenses of major taks forces, particularly the carriers.

When the first 055 is commissioned it will arguably be the most powerful surface combatant afloat, its major weakness being China's ongoing lack of a quad-packable medium-range SAM in the class of ESSM.

Oh no ! except carriers ofc different, the King is the Kirov the 2nd Nakhimov modernised for 2020 with ... missiles !!! a floating fortress with even completely unusual about 80 mm of armor around reactors and designated Battle Cruiser  and mainly with Polyment sytem, radars it is AEGIS like important also new LACM LR Kalibr, navalized S-400 etc...

After KD-III Sejong the Great 165 silos/missiles launchers, with small RAM !and 055 same power than Ticondroga especialy about 120 - 130 ( possible put more by ex ESSM ) , all 2 ASW helos a/two 127 - 130 mm etc...

With small SA-N-11, 32 for each 6 Kahstan systems a total of 456 missilles ! Nakhimov about + 60 missiles 80 Klub/Kalibr/Onyx replace 20 SS-N-19/Granit so ~ 500 !!!

I think the technology gap between Pyotr Velikiy and 055 is enough to give the latter the nod. Nakhimov maybe, but Nakhimov won't be ready when the first 055 is commissioned in 2019 either. Frankly I have serious doubts about the ability of these 1980s behemoths to function as an integrated combat system.

Sejong the Great, yes ok -- I forgot about those ships.

It is definitely ambitious to assert that 055 will be #1 when it is commissioned, but I think it is also difficult to conclusively refute.

AB Flight III will undoubtedly take the crown back when the first unit is commissioned in 2022 or thereabouts... at least until 055A!
