TF-2000 Project:

As follow-on of MİLGEM concept, in addition to performing an effective regional air defense function, TF-2000 project will carry Turkish Naval Forces to the new generation Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) frigate.

The decision was taken in September 2013 by Defense Executive Committee for the realization of the AAW Frigate Project in three phase; namely “design”, “prototype ship construction” and “serial production”.

Acquisition of this type of ship, first of all, is aimed to enhance our anti air warfare capabilities as well as other warfare capabilities with the contribution of national defense industry. Evolved command/control, communication (C3), sensor and weapon systems are expected to increase the depth of defense of our homeland starting from long distances and self-defence capability of our task groups at sea.

Great effort was put for indigenous production of the most important sensor, the Multi-Purpose Phased Array Radar (ÇAFRAD), for anti-air warfare. As a result of this effort the contract was signed between Undersecretariat of Defense Industry (SSM) and ASELSAN in September 2013. The above mentioned phased array radar will have the capability to detect the surface and air tracks from a long distance and provide data to engage if required with in the longest possible range of weapons which will create a layered air defense.

Within the context of the regional air defense architecture, weapons selection process is ongoing.

Nationally developed indigenous GENESİS Combat Management System (CMS) for MİLGEM project will be upgraded and used also in TF-2000 project.

As it is one of our priorities, capabilities which will be gained through TF-2000 project is going to be interoperable with our allies’ systems.

Currently, preparations of “Design Phase” of the regional air defense destroyer is underway.

“İ” Class Frigate Project:

As the continuation of MİLGEM concept, the design activities of the “İ” class frigate continue in “İstanbul Naval Shipyard Design Project Office”. Defense Executive Committee’s decision was granted on 30th of June 2015 for the construction of first ship in İstanbul Shipyard. Request for Proposal was promulgated by SSM and the tenders were received on 30 November 2016.

On 19 January 2017, first steel was cut for the Turkish frigate TCG İstanbul in Istanbul Naval Shipyard.

Defence Minister and Commander of Turkish Naval Forces attended the ceremony that marked the construction start of Turkey’s first indigenous frigate.

TCG İstanbul will be the first ship of a class of 4 frigates also known as İ (or İstif according to Turkish Naval spelling alphabet) class. The others will be called as TCG İzmir, TCG İzmit and TCG İçel.

The

was first revealed during the IDEF 2015 International Defense Industry Fair.

The new frigate will be about 14 meters longer but will have the same width as Ada class. TCG İstanbul will be 600 tons heavier and have a deeper draft due to the increased weapon load and other design changes.

The main gun is a 76mm with a stealth cupola. There is 16 cell Mk41 VLS system just behind the gun, for ESSM missiles.

The form of the bridge and the main mast is almost identical to the existing Ada class only slightly enlarge. There will be a Smart-S Mk2 radar and ARES-2 ESM

on the mast.

One difference between the ships is the number of the anti-ship missiles carried. The weapon load on İstif class will be the double of Ada class with 16 missiles launchers. This is the twice the usual load of the existing anti-ship missiles normally carried on Turkish warships.

Another difference is the selection of the self-defence weapons. While the Ada class has the Mk49 launcher for RAM anti-air missiles the İstif class will be fitted with a Mk15 Phalanx CIWS.

A comparison between Ada and İstif class

The above mentioned are the external differences between the two of Milgem ships. The internal changes are very hard to tell at this time. But nevertheless, one might safely say that the combat management system of the second generation will be an improved version of the first generation.

The construction of TCG İstanbul is expected to be completed within the next 46 months with the intended commissioning date 2021.

I have no idea about that speed but recently I found out about another nice feature of the Turkish OPV: they can be assembled/outfitted at the customer's site like here:

and shows two of the Tuzla-class modified for Turkmenistan (I've read they'll be able to shoot the Otomat AShMs, and I guess they were not interested in the sonar :)
(the source is a Russian forum, but the discussion there was indignant so I'm not going to post the link here)
