Sanctioning Huawei, China's largest telecom company, is bound to invite retaliatory measures and heavily detracts from the US narrative that a thaw is in order for Sino-US trade relations. Arresting an individual while overtly leaving Huawei alone allows the US to take punitive measures without compromising its promise to end the China-US trade war. However, I am almost certain that the US would have the justification and means to sanction Huawei if she really wished to do so.

I believe this is simply a kidnapping under the guise of law (considering the excuse is due to violating US sanction nearly a decade ago which China had not agreed to). Meng Wanzhou is simply a ransom used to force some sort of concession from Huawei or Chinese government, my guess would be to force Huawei to give up 5G patents to US company.

It is possible that the US might get what they want, however they are paying a much higher price for short term benefits.

You missed my point. I'm not in the least saying the Chinese masses are trying to wreck the trade deal. I'm saying Trump and his hawks underestimate how the Chinese masses would response in the face of the bullying tactics of the trade war which the arrest of the Huawei's CFO is a wider part of. Strong emotion of the Chinese masses as an example may lead to them boycotting American and Canadian products.

Wait, she's not stupid enough to do that, right? That's how they got ZTE info by seizing the computer of a ZTE employee. Meng would have to be stupid to travel with sensitive files on her to Western countries.
