Trade War with China

If the US had solid proof of any actual violations, why didn’t they just sanction Huawei like it did ZTE?

Going after an individual instead of the company, especially close family to the owner, smacks of mafia style scare tactics and fishing expeditions where the US is trying to find dirt rather than because they had any real proof.

It could also ironically be classed as precisely the kind of corporate espionage the US accuse China of, as she was likely to have sensitive company files on her person at the time of her detection, which would no doubt have also been seized and copied.

Sanctioning Huawei, China's largest telecom company, is bound to invite retaliatory measures and heavily detracts from the US narrative that a thaw is in order for Sino-US trade relations. Arresting an individual while overtly leaving Huawei alone allows the US to take punitive measures without compromising its promise to end the China-US trade war. However, I am almost certain that the US would have the justification and means to sanction Huawei if she really wished to do so.

I believe this is simply a kidnapping under the guise of law (considering the excuse is due to violating US sanction nearly a decade ago which China had not agreed to). Meng Wanzhou is simply a ransom used to force some sort of concession from Huawei or Chinese government, my guess would be to force Huawei to give up 5G patents to US company.

It is possible that the US might get what they want, however they are paying a much higher price for short term benefits.

Neither the U.S. nor Canada has provided any explanation for Meng Wanzhou's detention, said Geng Shuang, the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Thursday in a regular press briefing.

Geng reiterated China's solemn position on this issue, urging both the U.S. and Canada to clarify the reason for Meng's detention and release Meng immediately to protect her legal rights.

Meng, chief financial officer of Chinese tech giant Huawei, was detained in Vancouver earlier this month for extradition to the United States.

The company said Meng was detained while transferring between flights in Canada and is facing an "unspecific accusation" in a statement.

Well, it's not the Chinese masses wrecking this thing; it's that Trump's people keep contradicting each other over what was said and then Trump himself has such low credibility that when he says something, people assume it's false until proven true, so it's the American investors tearin' it apart at the stock market. They're lucky they took Wednesday off for the funeral.

You missed my point. I'm not in the least saying the Chinese masses are trying to wreck the trade deal. I'm saying Trump and his hawks underestimate how the Chinese masses would response in the face of the bullying tactics of the trade war which the arrest of the Huawei's CFO is a wider part of. Strong emotion of the Chinese masses as an example may lead to them boycotting American and Canadian products.

This guy and his team discovered the Quantum spin hall effect in 17. A technology which is believed to be the next big breaking point on computer chip's performance.

On Dec 1. He was scheduled to attend a Banquet with Sabrina Meng. The CFO of Huawei.

On the same day, Sabrina Meng was arrested when she stopped over in Canada. Zhang committed suicide that day.

2 days later, Dec 3. One of the largest chip maker in the world ASML announced that their supplier Prodrive suffered fire damage, delaying their order deliveries. This includes a 120mil dollar EUV machine ordered by a chinese company.

Wait, she's not stupid enough to do that, right? That's how they got ZTE info by seizing the computer of a ZTE employee. Meng would have to be stupid to travel with sensitive files on her to Western countries.
