Minister says military still wants F-35 planes

Taiwan is still interested in buying F-35 fighters from the US because the model matches the air force’s requirements, Minster of National Defense Yen Teh-fa (嚴德發) told a legislative committee yesterday.

The F-35B’s short takeoff and vertical-landing capabilities definitely meet the needs of the air force, Yen told lawmakers in his first question-and-answer session as minister during a meeting of the Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.

However, the Ministry of National Defense has not made an official request to the US to purchase the aircraft and he could not say how many it wants to buy, he said.

Yen, a former secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC), reiterated a plan the ministry first announced in late 2011.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department of North American Affairs Director-General Remus Chen (陳立國) told a news briefing that the government has made clear its intention to seek weaponry from the US to meet its air defense needs.

“Hopefully, those needs can be fulfilled soon,” he said.

Asked to comment on Chen’s remarks, American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) spokeswoman Sonia Urbom said in an e-mail that the US remains fully committed to fulfilling its responsibilities under the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), but cannot comment on pending or potential arms sales.

“In accordance with the TRA, we will continue to make available to Taiwan defense articles and services necessary to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability,” she said. “We continue to review Taiwan’s defensive needs on an ongoing basis and will consult with Congress as required.”

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) was quoted as saying in May last year that her administration had not dismissed the possibility of obtaining F-35 fighters.

“We don’t rule out any items that would be meaningful to our defense and our defense strategy, and the F-35 is one such item,” Tsai told Reuters in an interview.

And in today's edition of very bad ideas:

The ROCAF could lease used F-15s (though it seems that the only source is some obscure Taiwan outlet, but that's Tyler Rogoway for you).

Leasing aircraft from the USAF is not unheard of. If I remember correctly when the Australians were looking at C17 they leased units that were technically delivered to the USAF, then when the Ausies found that they liked the Birds they just paid the difference.
In the Story he points to the F15 and the AV8 as a possibility.
Taiwan views STOVL as a serious advantage for there defense needs as if Conflict came to blows with the mainland, it's likely that one f the mainlands first actions would be to try and knockout all of Taiwan's runways as such a aircraft with the ability to take off and be recovered with almost on runway would be advantageous.
Of course both the Eagle and Harrier are both technically Boeing machines and that opens a potential hotbed. Boeing is of course making a lot of deals with the PRC via there airliner business. One could see the CCP trying to use the line of business as a noose to deter from any part of this.
Still I think the Trump admin would be more able to open the door for more late block F16's and those birds I think are more in line with the needs of a smaller military.

The F-15s will be a procurement nightmare, with the need to refurbish those airframes (not to mention, how long are their airbases going to last in wartime? They might have a little short takeoff capability, but the useful load would then be problematic).

The AV-8s have STVOL, but they probably wouldn't fare too well in air to air combat.

Depends on the fight. In the Falklands conflict the Harrier proved fairly adapt at dogfighting. But these are AV8B+ not vintage sea harriers so they have a couple aces up there sleeves. First the AV8B+ radar is the APG 65 which if that draws a blank it's the same radar as that in the F18 Hornet the AV8B+ is rated for use of not just sidewinders but also AMRAAM missiles. The STOVL features of the Harrier series also mean it is designed with thrist vectoring which can be a real advantage in a dog fight.

now noticed Taiwan shadows China carrier group after Xi warning

Taiwan has sent ships and aircraft to shadow a Chinese aircraft carrier group through the narrow Taiwan Strait, its defense ministry said on Wednesday, after Chinese President Xi Jinping offered his strongest warning against Taiwan separatism to date.

China claims Taiwan as its sacred territory and considers the self-ruled island a wayward province, which Xi said on Tuesday would face the “punishment of history” for any attempt at separatism.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said the carrier group, led by China’s sole operational aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, entered the waterway late on Tuesday, but kept on its western side.

By midday on Wednesday it has left Taiwan’s air defense identification zone heading southwest, the ministry said, adding it looked like China was conducting drills.

Taiwan’s military sent ships and aircraft to shadow the carrier group the entire way, but spotted nothing out of the ordinary and people in Taiwan should not be concerned, it added.

China’s Defence Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In January, the Liaoning sailed twice through the Taiwan Strait, in what China said was part of routine drills.

Taiwan says China has ramped up military exercises around the island in the past year or so. The island is one of China’s most sensitive issues and a potential military flashpoint.

China’s hostility towards Taiwan has risen since the 2016 election of President Tsai Ing-wen, a member of the island’s pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party.

China suspects Tsai wants to push for formal independence, which would cross a red line for Communist Party leaders in Beijing, though Tsai has said she wants to maintain the status quo and is committed to ensuring peace.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office on Monday expressed anger at Taiwan Premier William Lai’s description of the island as a sovereign independent country, calling it a “serious provocation” and denying that Taiwan was, or could ever be, one.

China has also been infuriated by a law signed last week by U.S. President Donald Trump that encourages the United States to send senior officials to Taiwan to meet Taiwanese counterparts, and vice versa.

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Alex Wong is in Taiwan this week, where he is set to speak at a business event in Taipei later on Wednesday with Tsai.

Chiang Kai Shek's plan to retake the mainland. It appears to be part of a broader war in coordination with the Allied forces. ROC on Taiwan would attack coastal mainland China, retake Nanjing and set it as China's national capital.

South China front
  1. Take coastal Southern China - Guangdong, Hainan
  2. Move deeper inland and take western China
  3. Capture Central Asia and Ural region
East China front
  1. Take coastal Eastern China and establish Nanjing as ROC capital - Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong
  2. Move deeper inland, take Northern China including Beijing (bypassing most of the central plains) and Mongolia
  3. Capture Siberia
North East front
  1. Take Tianjin and Liaoning, cut off Manchuria from the rest of China.
  2. Move deeper inland, take Manchuria
  3. Pincer movement in coordination with Allied forces in Far East Russia.
DZBtUIZU0AEUg86.jpg
Western Russia front
  1. Bombard Moscow with hydrogen bombs
  2. NATO/Allied forces take Western Russia
  3. Manage Western Russia using UN forces
Far East front
  1. Allied forces capture entire Korean peninsula, Vladivostok, and Kuril Islands
  2. Allied forces pincer movement in coordination with ROC forces to cut off Russian Far East

That's getting too political, saying Taiwan doesn't deserve to exist. The vast majority of Taiwanese do not want to be part of China, so I wouldn't say it's a waste. Please stick to the topic which is Taiwans military.

Yes sir, you've nailed it, but lots of people who enjoy freedom that was paid for on somebody else's dime don't appreciate what they have, that's kinda cheap, but typical..

There is no doubt that Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai Shek) had plan to retake mainland, BUT the newspaper article that OedoSoldier referred to is NOT owned or controlled by Jiang's government. It was even shutdown by Jiang in 1960. See the history here.

The article is so ridiculous that it envisioned to take up the whole Asian landmass east of the Ural for China, see the "new" provinces added in the picture, they are Siberia. Only during the Yuan dynasty did China as a state have some part of southern Siberia as directly controlled territory because the Mongols roamed these areas. No other Chinese dynasty had ruled or claimed to rule these area except Qing and Ming (after Yuan) controlled eastern coastal area of Siberia.

It is also ridiculous that the article envisioned bombing of Moscow with nukes. Whose nukes? Jiang was dreaming to return to mainland, but he was not crazy of annexing 2/3 of USSR and nuke Moscow.

This is to say that the author of that newspaper was not historically correct, and politically and legally not representing Jiang's ROC government.

Jiang would never have been able to invade the mainland with just the resources of Taiwan. And with China firmingly in the Soviet camp during much of the Cold War, the only scenario where retaking the mainland was on the card was a WWIII situation where the Soviets were too busy fighting America and NATO, and Jiang could get America military help.
