Statistics have changed since the last defectors. "Love of Motherland" is not as great today. Although there is no doubt elements that do have a affection to the PRC as time goes by facts on the ground are harder to change and grow deeper into the populous.
A peep is likely as far as it gets.

For an F35, they will happily amend that policy. They can pay the pilot 50m and still enjoy a better than 50% saving compared to buying the jet from the maker (not that that is an option).

Sounds like you're making up assumptions (not as great? a "peep?") based on hope and Western media rather than understanding of Chinese people.

If an F-35 deal does go through, which I highly doubt, short of much greater retaliation by China even before delivery, it would be a small gesture to get one of them flown over the mainland to remind the US of the stupidity of the game its playing.

More likely, the Mainland will probably treat Taiwanese F35s the way Israel treats Hezbollah's attempts to acquire Yakhonts.

assuming that, they could get the suppliers to play ball and didn't start a global war.

A package like that wouldn't be a bad choice. Going with the Super Hornet has the downside of the expense of twin engines. That means double the maintenance double the spares, double everything. F16 is still a very versatile system and has some room to grow. the Taiwanese have experience with the A model which could be leveraged for training on new birds. No matter what happens it's not likely that Taiwan could get F35's until the later side of the 2020's early 2030's just because of existing orders and unit cost. F16C or later by contrast are more available.

Given that Taipei has to pay for its submarines in the late 2020s early 2030s, the F35s could have to wait until the late 2030s.
