Snorkelers interact with a Florida manatee in the Crystal River, Florida. On winter days, Florida manatees flock by the hundreds to the balmy waters of Three Sisters Springs, drawing crowds of snorkelers and kayakers to the U.S. sanctuary, where people may swim with the endangered species. But as tolerant as the gentle, whiskered sea giants can be of the accidental kicks and splashes of delighted tourists, wild life regulators want to ban most canoes and paddle boards and create people-free zones to protect the wintering "sea cow."

frilled-shark_3171332k.jpg

The rarely sighted frilled shark (Chlamydoselachus anguineus) - whose ancestry dates back 80 million years and is known as a living fossil - has turned up in waters off southeastern Victoria, Australia. The ugly beast, which has 300 teeth over 25 rows, was caught by fishermen trawling in waters near Lakes Entrance in the state's Gippsland region. The men were left scratching their heads at the sight of the two-metre-long creature, whose head and body resemble an eel, but whose tail is more reminiscent of a shark.

It is the second-most venomous snake in the world and is now regularly milked for its venom as part of the park's life-saving anti-venom program.

Footage of fishermen clinging onto a sinking boat before being thrown into the sea off the coast of Scotland has emerged. The terrifying video shows the crew of Irish vessel, The Iuda Naofa, swept into the Atlantic Ocean by waves as the Coastguard struggle to grab them and winch them to safety. The crew, dangerously close to the still moving propeller of the upturned boat, lose their grasp of the stern and fall about 6 ft into the waves. They were left helplessly floating in the water before being rescued one by one by winch. The rescue happened on Tuesday 50 miles north of the Butt of Lewis off the remote Western Isles.

Ice has engulfed a lighthouse as a fierce winter storm grips South Haven, Michigan. Sharp icicles and surreal formations can be seen hanging from the railings after strong waves crashed onto the piers. After each coating the water quickly freezes to ice and the pier is transformed into a slippery, white wonderland. Weather in the area dipped into the minus figures and froze over Lake Michigan in the beginning of January.
