Not massive news, but I always find the BBC's naming of articles such as this both annoying and funny.

It's always "Chinese FURY" as if china's superfuming about this. Whereas for most other articles on similar occaions wrt the US it seems to be "United States criticism" or something along those lines. But maybe it's just me.

It's always "Chinese FURY" as if china's superraging about this (it says anger here but on the main bbc website it says fury, just for le record). Whereas for most other articles on similar occaions wrt the US it seems to be "United States criticism" or something along those lines. I can't help feel they're trolling readers a little with these altering intensity of verbs but maybe it's just me.

So nobody thing Mr Ma winning his second term in as Taiwanese President is newsworthy?

Personally I think its highly significant, especially has he gained a much better margin that most of the media were indicating about the race. Given the overall economic situation and the implications now for faster cross straits integration, surely this was the one that the DPP must have been best placed to win if their cause was going anywhere?

I was pretty busy yesterday but I got the distinct impression that the Western media gave this a pretty low profile in the bulletins (also sure a DPP win would have got headlines!).

As for the Oil sanctions story, I would not lose too much sleep over it. As other much cleverer people than I have said, simply expect a plethora of new private companies being set up globally, specifically and solely to trade Hydrocarbons with Iran.

btw anyone hear/read the story about ever more UK companies dealing with Chinese companies directly in the yuan and not the dollar anymore? Interesting times!

Ma's victory is good for Taiwan, China, and the US, but what it proves is that Taiwan people think that a closer relation with the mainland is what's good for them, which means even the DPP will need to build some kind of connection with the mainland, if they haven't already, to win over some votes in future election

Ma's got charisma (at least i think so) but the KMT is getting left behind

anyone from Taiwan or following Taiwan input will be appreciated

integration, hmm... as long as all sides enjoy the status quo, probably there is little reason to shake up a change, so a slow but steady drift to de facto integration

Well Delft we shall have to wait a while to see what decision the cruise line makes.

To me there's more than likely too much damage. The ship will have to be 100% re-fit to sail again. They might as well build a new ship. Besides who's going to want to sail on a ship that was sunk? And yes I know that ships sunk at Pearl harbor on Dec. 7th 1941 were raised and sailed again.
The Dutch salvage company Smit has said it would like to salvage the ship but that no decision has yet been taken. If she is salvaged and repaired she will be given a new name to not remind customers of this accident.

Thanks Delft.. hard to imagine that anyone would attempt to salvage that ship. We shall see!
