Why not use sonars to detect planes ?

Why not use sonars to detect planes ? It doesn't matter how you shape your planes or what coating you use you can't do away with the sound of supersonic boom or the sound of the engines. So wouldn't it be more logical to track planes by the noise they make. In the wars in Iraq and Yugoslavia animals like dogs and wolfs can hear the planes and cruise missile's coming while their radars never picked them up. And is there technology to jam sonars ?

I'm afraid this thread won't stand too long. Anyway, are you kidding? How do you expect sonar to chase something faster than itself?

problem one, where do you put it?
Aircraft mounting out. the aircraft's own engines would deafen it. If it's super sonic the shockwave of the Jet would create a sound barrier around the jet and it's speed is so high that sound just won't catch it.

Ground based sounds best but....
Higher altitude flight would be harder to detect then low altitude.
Atmospheric phenomena can produce false positives, Thunder for example.
there are also other unexplained phenomenons that produce sounds that we have yet to have a explanation but could produce false signatures. as well as man made events commercial demolition or mining for example.

Super sonic aircrafts are faster then the sound they produce by the time the bang is heard the fighter or bomber has already past.

My son was a USN sonar tech for 9 years.. He says..<<This is IMPOSSIBLE>>
