Finn, I think most of our nerdy members would rather visit a CVN or an Arliegh Burke. I can't imangine these guys ,except a few, hanging in "TJ" with all the "Chickas"...Thy'ed be down there looking for the Mexican military...
I went on the Enterprise when it was under renovation. So parts of the ship were off limits, and there were no planes on board. And if you want to see the DDGs and CGs, you have to take the train to TJ, because it goes by their moorings. I don't even know if you can go on them, their kind of hidden form public view.
Well, one time I was in Ensenada, and on the way to the hotel we passed this Mexican military base. At least that's what I think it was. It was right in the middle of this neighborhood with hotels, restaurants and stuff, and there were four or five guys with M-16s just standing right next to this concrete bunker at the entrance. The whole place was actually pretty small, maybe the size of a city block. Later I saw inside. It had a couple of Cessnas and stuff. The sign said "Federal Military District Headquarters" or something like that in Spanish. Very odd, just sitting there next to all these hotels and houses and stuff. Also, on the way back to the US, we went a checkpoint with some M-16 toting guys who were (I think) Federal Police. If you wanna see automatic weapons in public, Mexico is the place.
Speaking of seeing miltiary stuff, my grandma is going to China in a couple of weeks, on a tour package thing. They are going to go to all of the "tourist places" in China (Great Wall, Guiling Gorges, Old Beijing, Forbidden City, Downtown Shanghai, etc.), so they probably won't see anything of interest to us. But I still told her to take pics of any military stuff she sees. I can see it now:
Finn's Grandma: What, the Varyag is a well-known tousist destination!
Ministry of State Security Agent: Silence!
