Whale Wars... The Saga Continues...

I think this is a case of the two sides both being bad apples and fully deserving each other.

The whole hunts are themselves a blatant abuse of name of science, and even hunting whales for meat is more about pride and hubris rather than rational economic need.

Very few people in Japan eat whale meat these days, and fewer actually like the taste. The whole enterprise is almost retarded in that there is so little genuine commercial demand for whale meat that the whalers had use connections and back room deals to make it part of school meals to avoid a mountain of wasted whale meat. But whale meat is actually pretty high in mercury and other heavy metals, so they are pretty much poisoning countless kids just so they can justify this pointless waste of life.

The anti hunt protestors are your typical animal rights fanatics who seem to value animals more than their fellow humans, and who are so far up their irony towers with righteous indignation and fake moral superiority they think they themselves can do no wrong, and that any action they take is either justified, or the target of their attacks deserve whatever they might get.

Both lots are perfect examples of people with far more money and time on their hands than sense in their heads, and the world be a far better place if they quit their pigheaded pursuits and devoted their time, resources and energy to more worthy goals that actually matter to people other than themselves.

Although I tend to agree, I would say: try not to judge animal right activists. If they truely value animals more than humans, they would start using harpoon on Japanese sailors. Animal right activists are not more intelligent, educated, or ethical than average people. Typically, they are young rich ones wishing for meaning and found passion in fighting for the weak. So, despite their failings, my sympathy and respect goes to them rather than ones who cannot quit eating burgers, whale meat or otherwise.

I also second the opinion that the whalers are abusing the term 'scientific research'. We don't need baleen to produce brushes these days and the meat is most certainly declining in popularity. Every single product gleaned from a whale carcass in the past can be substituted by something man made. I don't usually side with activists but in this case, I certainly support sea sheperd. It's easy to think of these animals as fish, rather than intelligent mammals.

You can talk about sustainable hunting but when it comes to whaling, its much more complex. There are large populations of Minke whales off the coast of Antarctica but the whalers are probably hunting with indiscretion and wouldn't hesitate to take a blue whale. Sea sheperd has made a difference in

Their tactics may be controversial but the Japanese hunt is most certainly unnecessary. It's not research, it's a lie.
