Using judgement and value of commentating on media (pictures, videos, articles)

If I can offer some feedback.

1. It seems that member xyqq is sharing a good amount of content, mainly photographic in nature.
2. He is not really breaking any forum rules, INCLUDING the unwritten ones pertaining to quality of contributions in the flagship forums.
3. Some people may find said content - as presented - mundane or uninteresting.

I think that point 3 is a matter of personal interpretation. For example, I couldn't care less about by78 bumping immeasurable threads by reposting already posted/lost images in higher resolution, when its often done out of context and months after said images were relevant. I understand why he does it, I applaud him for his diligence and methodical contributions, and I remain completely uninterested in the content itself, mainly because I have already seen it.

I'm not saying this to rile the fellow member up or to be confrontational. It's just that I feel something like this is in the eye of the beholder, always.

Therefore, it would make sense to me that I kept my observations to myself, and not pay attention to those reposts if I'm not interested in them. I think the same strategy could be relatable to the conversation we are having, hope this helps!

I can't see where I normally participate got anything to do with my opinons. Or are you saying my opinons are not as valid as yours because of where I normally participate?

I'm a member here just the same as you.

No, that's not what I'm implying. The point is that the flagship threads are different from off-topic threads. Higher expectations and standards prevail at flagship threads. Since your participation is mostly confined to the off-topic non-military threads, you might not have been aware of the norms, habits, expectations, and standards at the flagship military threads.

So far, I have posted 383 messages in total, many of which are textual only (including this one).
Together, they received 1,590 Likes, 34 Loves, and 17 Wows.
So my posts with images clearly received over 5 Likes per post.
The explanations of the images are well received, as many trigger good discussions among members. For example, this post not only received 9 Likes by itself but also had more than 20 follow-up posts related to the note "#04 Su30MK2 carrying indigenous PL12 and imported R73 training missiles underwings."

Actually, I've just gone through your entire posting history. You have very few text-only posts (I didn't count your posts in this thread). Very clearly, your post with images received less than 5 likes per post and closer to 4.3 likes.

Personally, I am able to live with pictures and captions even if I think they are unnecessary and of little benefit.
However, I also think that it is always beneficial to try and improve the quality of contributions as well.

The whole reason of laying this out in the open, is so that the member base is able to come out and say what they feel like regarding the quality of said contributions... because as has been repeatedly stated -- there are no forum rules against posts with captions if they are deemed to be personally judged as unnecessary.

If many members don't care about the above, and if @xyqq does not feel inclined to alter his behaviour, then that is fine, it just means that at least everyone's come out and said it.

In which case, @by78, in future let it go and stop making remarks and contentious posts in regards to @xyqq's posting and captions in future, because these debates just become off topic for the various flagship threads.
Ultimately there are no rules against captions if one personally deems them as unnecessary or distracting.

Even after you told my accuser to "stop making remarks and contentious posts in regards to @xyqq's posting and captions", Bltizo, he continues doing so right in this thread.

He admitted my accusation against him as a troll by silence (the same behavior is also well exhibited in this thread), don't I deserve a formal apology from him as well as the pledge that this will never happen again?

Really? By your logic, you admitted that your image posts bring little value and serve to clog up the forum because you remained silent to my accusation. I think I and the forum at large deserve an apology from you for continuing to post low-quality content.

Since when did silence become an admission of guilt? Ever heard of the

Now you admit it.

To both of you.

The entire reason I've created this thread is to make both of you have a dialogue.

I've been tracking this issue for a while, and while by78's more recent comments to you have been abrasive, his original requests to you were also reasonable to make, however it is a lack of productive response and dialogue is why we got here in the first place.

There is a certain level of etiquette that is ideal, and if you think his original requests to you were unreasonable, then you should have outright said so and defended your case instead of ignoring him which was abrasive in its own right.

In turn, @by78, it is also clear that @xyqq is refusing to change his posting pattern which is very much within his rights and other members have expressed that they are not annoyed by it, nor are there rules currently against posting captions even if they are judged to be of limited use.
Therefore @by78, ultimately if @xyqq is refusing you requests then there is nothing else you can do and as a matter of enforcing the rules further discussions and remarks on this matter in other threads will be deemed subject to moderator action.

I will make another remark as a posting member rather than a moderator.

@by78 -- you've been here for a while now, as have I.

You will recognize that the longer you stay here, the less patience you may have for posts that you consider to be of dubious quality, or in terms of their contributory value to the forum and for disseminating general PLA knowledge, news, updates etc.

Everyone here obviously has their own list of posting members they consider whose usual contributions to be of more value and a list of posting members they consider to be of lesser value -- but individuals whose posts you consider to be of lesser value are ultimately still allowed to be here if they do not break any rules.
The very fact that being here longer and having a longer record of knowing what this forum is like, means that longer staying individuals -- perhaps counterintuitively -- need to exert more patience than members who've been here a shorter time.

His captions being distracting is only one of the reasons I listed. Many of his captions also serve little to no purpose by describing the bloody obvious, such as this post here. Do we need to be informed that an image depicts a plane taking off, or landing, or a pilot is getting into the cockpit? Can you not see that for yourself? These captions are just a waste of space because they reveal nothing new, interesting, or something that we can't tell from the images alone.

Speaking of new and interesting, many of his images are simply low quality and uninteresting: just some blurry, low-resolution photos of platforms that have been around for years and even decades, and all of which we can access on our own. We are now into the second decade of the 21st century already; what would have been interesting in the early 2000s or the late 1990s is most definitely not interesting today, especially when the images are of such poor quality and reveal nothing new. SDF is not an image aggregation website or a depository of every open-source, easily accessible low-quality image having to do with the Chinese military. It's not to much to expect a more judicious exercise of judgement in what to post and what not to post.

I won't repeat the rest of my long post on page one of this thread, but my objections are about much more than the manner with which he captions his images.

Well here's a counterpoint: I've been here since 2009, and I rarely frequent the military threads because I find them too technical and inaccessible to those without sufficient knowledge. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Is it a bad thing to post captions that make the pictures more accessible to the common reader? In the example you posted above, I wouldn't know why that guy was shining a flashlight under the plane. I also wouldn't immediately know why that plane has a parachute behind it. To you, those captions might be useless, but to me they're meaningful.

For example:

I really have no idea what Siege and Deino are talking about in the above post, or why Siege posted that plane picture. What am I supposed to see in that picture? I have no clue.

In contrast, I can follow @xyqq 's post, I know that those are pictures of the J-10A, and they're doing some night training. That is meaningful to me.
