US Navy DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class

But this 20 small VLS are divided into 4 different locations.
There are indeed four areas where they are located (two groups aft of the hanger one to port and one to starboard, and two groupings forward of the island, both port and starboard), but each of those groupings are actually made up of five 4 seperate and distinct launchers, each with its own armored encasement.

The Mk-57 is a fgour cell launcher and it is meant to be seperate from the cells near it or elsewhere on the vessle, with its own armored encasement to protect from multiple launchers blowing up together when hit. That armored encasement is specifically designed to direct any blast away from the ship and other cells if at all possible.

Now, clearly, if a missile is large enough, with a warhead large enough to impart the strike damage to more than one Mk-57 launcher, then all of those launchers involved would then be expected to have their own encasements help keep other non-impacted launchers from suffering damage or destruction from sympathetic, secondary balsts. That's the idea anyway..

When a average person who does not know about this ship see it for the first time I bet they will be like WTF??! Is this something out of stars wars for real

Certainly is a massive peice of work, a marvel of modern engineering, with price tag which would fit a entire small navy

Well, she is desgnated as a DDG, Guided Missile Destroyer.

In reality, at almost 15,000 tons and 600 feet long with a beam of 80ft., she is at least a CG, Guided Missile Crusier...but really, IMHO, is today's equivalent of a modern battleship.

I wish we were building six or eight of these.

is going to be awesome. But within 5-10 years, it will begin to be replaced by this, which has already undergone significant live fire testing:

This testing showed in this video, with the rounds and technology, is already over 3 years old. A lot of progress has been made since then.

The rail gun will be a true leap ahead, and game changer for the naval battle space.

The 'Zumwalt' is sure going to set new naval standards.........but it will be a few years before its true potential will be realised with the rail gun system.
Initially, its sea keeping abilities will be closely scrutinised, together with all its other new technologies aboard.

I'am sure its not just the US that is going to see how the 'Zumwalt' performs.......but other countries Navies as well, as they try to evaluate for themselves if they should follow the same path as the Americans with their future warship projects.

I think we already know it's true potential..

- AGS Gun Mounts delvered and preparing for lifting onto vessel
- Composite Hanger Lifted onto vessel

- Hull Complete

The USS Zumwalt, DDG-1000 is nearing completion and launch at Bath iron Works in Maine. She is expected to launch in late 2013 with intial hand-over to the U.S. Navy after builder's trials in 2014, and final commissioning and in-service sometime in late 2015 to early 2016. DDG-1001 will be eighteen months to two years behind her .

Here are some of her latest pictures:

These vessels will initially operate with the new, long range, AGS as they are launched. They will begin testing, and then switching to the new Rail-Gun System sometime in the 2020s.

Man! I can't wait till she go on sea trials! There is no warship like her anywhere on Earth and probably won't be for a while. She reminds me of when the F-22 or even the F-117 first took to the skies.. a good generation ahead of everyone else.

Russian Billionaire Andrey Melnichenko's super yacht probably comes closest in terms of looks.

How about 12-14? one for each CSG(Carrier Strike Group) and 3-6 standing by or cruising as an SAG..Surface Action Group.

Honestly at first I did not like this ship. But the more I learn about her.. I just love it!.

Humm a Zumwalt class SAG could be;
1 Zumwalt class DDG
1 Ticonderoga class CG
4 Arliegh Burke Class DDGs
1 Virginia/Los Angeles class SSN..

Unbeatable.
