Ft. Worth, Texas (July 7, 2006) - The inauguration of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) was held at Lockheed Martin Corporation, in Ft. Worth, Texas. "Lighting II" is expected to be the largest military aircraft procurement in modern times, the stealthy, supersonic F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is a 5th Generation, supersonic, multi-role stealth fighter designed to replace aging AV-8B Harriers, A-10's, F-16s, F/A-18 Hornets and United Kingdom (UK) Harrier GR.7s and Sear Harriers. The three variants of the aircraft are conventional takeoff and Landing (CTOL) for the U.S. Air Force, short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variant, for the U.S. Marine Corps and the UK and carrier variant (CV) aircraft, for the U.S. Navy.

Arliegh Burke class DDG.

Technological advances have improved the capability of modern destroyers culminating in the Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class. Named for the Navy's most famous destroyer squadron combat commander and three-time Chief of Naval Operations, the Arleigh Burke was commissioned July 4, 1991, and was the most powerful surface combatant ever put to sea. Like the larger Ticonderoga-class cruisers, DDG 51's combat systems center around the Aegis combat system and the SPY-lD, multi-function phased array radar. The combination of Aegis, the Vertical Launching System, an advanced anti-submarine warfare system, advanced anti-aircraft missiles and Tomahawk, the Burke-class continues the revolution at sea.

The DDG 51 class incorporates all-steel construction. In 1975, the cruiser USS Belknap (CG 26) collided with USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67). Belknap suffered severe damage and casualties because of her aluminum superstructure. On the basis of that event, the decision was made that all future surface combatants would return to a steel superstructure. And, like most modern U.S. surface combatants, DDG 51 utilizes gas turbine propulsion. These ships replaced the older Charles F. Adams and Farragut-class guided missile destroyers.

Yes it is I the great Popeye..Let's see those ships will probaly be used because of their flight deck space and storage space on board. Because in reality things could get out of hand and some of those evacuees may need to be trnsported to Naples or another city. To be sent back to the US.

Out of hand situation= more evacuees than expected...

20 July..edit The USN needs the amphibs in case the landing craft need to be used to shuttle the evacuees from shore to ship..

US Navy Hospital ships

The USN operates two Mercy class hospital ships. The USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) and USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) each contain 12 fully-equipped operating rooms, a 1,000 bed hospital facility, digital radiological services, a diagnostic and clinical laboratory, a pharmacy, an optometry lab, a cat scan and two oxygen producing plants. Both vessels have a helicopter deck capable of landing large military helicopters, as well as side ports to take on patients at sea.

Both hospital ships are converted San Clemente-class super tankers. Mercy was delivered in 1986 and Comfort in 1987. Normally, the ships are kept in a reduced operating status in Baltimore, Md., and San Diego, Calif., by a small crew of civilian mariners and active duty Navy medical and support personnel. Each ship can be fully activated and crewed within five days.

The ships are among the largest in the USN inventory at 69,000 tons displacement. A lenght of 894 ft and a beam of 105 ft.

The USNS Mercy deployed from it's homeport of Naval Station San Diego CA on 24 April 2006. USNS Mercy is on a five-month deployment during which it will visit areas of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands where its crew and several health and civic-related organizations will work together to aid in humanitarian assistance and civic efforts. Mercy is uniquely capable of supporting medical and humanitarian assistance needs and is configured with special medical equipment and a robust multi-specialized medical team to provide a range of services ashore as well as aboard the ship. The medical staff is augmented with an assistance crew, many of whom are part of non-governmental organizations, which have significant medical capabilities.

The Mercy made a deployment last year for Tsumani disaster relief effort.

The USN has established a photo web page for this specfic deployment. Currently there are over 400 hi-res pics posted on that site. Here's the link..enjoy the pics...Check the samples in the thumbnails...The fourth pic is of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo congradulating crewmembers.
