A USAF C-17 taking off from an airbase in South Korea has just landed in Taipei Songshan Airport several hours ago. The visit is a landmark event because it marks the very first time a USAF aircraft has landed in Taiwan since the end of the Vietnam War.

Not strictly true. A pair of F-18s landed in Taiwan in 2015 I believe due to technical difficulties? This is however the first time a US military aircraft landed in Taiwan on purpose since the end of the Vietnam War.

Well it can be said so. Both US and Taiwanese authorities were very low-key about the F-18 event while this time it's a high-profile visit with the Taiwanese government super high-key about it.

So I copied this from the COVID sub to give u guys some more context:

A USAF C-17 carrying 750 thousand COVID vaccines (type unknown but presumably AZ) and senators Tammy Duckworth, Dan Sullivan and Chris Coons has arrived at Taipei Songshan Airport at 7:19 AM 6/6 Taipei time. This marks a landmark event because this is the first time a USAF aircraft has officially landed in Taiwan since the end of the Vietnam war.

According to Taiwanese media, this event also marks a great victory for both the U.S. and Taiwan and a "monumental defeat" for China since not only has the C-17 successfully evaded PLAAF surveillance by arriving during bad weather and successfully fooling PLAAF surveillance via C-12 decoys, "thus successfully exposing the inferior capabilities of the PLAAF", it also marks a "great diplomatic humiliation" for China since China has failed to stop "the US military returning to Taiwan" which "Chinese authorities have vowed to stop such an event from happening".

It’s the visit of those 3 senators (Duckworth is easy to spot as she uses a wheelchair, as well as the obsequious and reptilian movements of the FM).

Surprised they used a C-17 to transport them and not a “VC” aircraft.

Well if you read my additional post the flight also contained 750 thousand doses of COVID vaccines, so I think they just decided one flight is a lot more convenient than two.
