Re: US agrees UK tech transfer for JSF!

Britain isn't other partners, so I couldn't really care less what happens to them.

But what do you mean "no stealth" being offered to other countries? This is about allowing the UK to upgrade the plane without having to get the US to do it/give permission. "Stealth" doesn't come into it.

i was refering to US not allowng stealth tech to other countries in JSF program.

so if this agreement is only on source code access, not on stealth tech access then the very purpose of this program is defeated.:coffee:

That's a myth, we had a discussion on this in DT, when the news about Australia not getting the full blown version of JSF came out. A poster that works on the F-22 project clearly said that every partner country is getting a stealth version.

USS Farragut(DDG-99) Joins Fleet

Damn The Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead!

The Navy will commission the newest Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer Farragut on June 10 during a 10 a.m. ceremony at NS Mayport.
Sen. Mel Martinez will deliver the principal address. Sen. Susan Collins is ship's sponsor. Also expected in attendance during the ceremony are Congressmen, Secretary of the Navy Donald Winters, flag officers, state and local officials.

One of the Union's great heroes, Farragut gained fame for his exploits while in command of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron during the Civil War. In 1862, his ships fought past Confederate forts to capture New Orleans, proving for the first time that cities could be taken by naval forces. In 1863 at Port Hudson, he gained control of the Mississippi river, splitting the Confederacy. In 1864, he boldly led his squadron through a minefield to win the Battle of Mobile Bay. Farragut was appointed the U.S. Navy's first four-star Admiral in 1866, but is most famous for his cry at the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 1864: ''Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!''

Four previous ships have been named Farragut: a torpedo boat (1899-1919); a destroyer (1920-1930); a second destroyer (1934-1945) that earned 14 battle stars in World War II (including Pearl Harbor, Coral Sea, Eastern Solomons, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa); and a guided-missile destroyer (1960-1989) that took part in contingency operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean and earned a Navy Unit Commendation.

Designated DDG 99, Farragut is the 49th of 62 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. This highly capable multimission ship can conduct a variety of operations in support of the national military strategy, from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection. Farragut will be capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously. The ship contains a number of offensive and defensive weapons designed to support maritime defense needs well into the 21st century.

Cmdr. Deidre L. McLay of Boulder City, Nev., will become the first commanding officer of the ship and will lead her crew of approximately 383 officers and enlisted personnel. The 9,200-ton Farragut is being built by Bath Iron Works, a company of General Dynamics, and is 509.5 feet in length, has a waterline beam of 59 feet, and a navigational draft of 32 feet. Four gas turbine engines will power the ship to speeds in excess of 30 knots.

Levin Helps Lead Passage of Amendment to Name Aircraft Carrier after President Gerald Ford
Created: 6/14/2006 3:05:23 PM
Updated: 6/14/2006 6:53:59 PM

WASHINGTON - Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the senior Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, today joined Armed Services Chairman John Warner, R-Va., in introducing an amendment to name the CVN-78 aircraft carrier as the U.S.S. GERALD FORD. The amendment was adopted as part of the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2007 fiscal year, which the Senate is currently considering.

“We in Michigan have long held Gerry Ford with such affection and esteem,” said Sen. Levin. “Naming this new class of nuclear aircraft after President Ford is an appropriate way to honor him. He was deeply respected by people on both sides of the political aisle, and he knew how to pull people together in common causes. He came to be president at time when we needed a healer and needed someone to unify this nation in a time of turmoil, and he succeeded in healing and uniting our nation.”

The CVN-78 is the first of a new class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers for the Navy.

I was just watching a show about CVN-78 just a couple of days ago on 'the Military Channel.' Well it was about the new class of CV in general, CVN-21/CVNX. Man is it cool :D Seeing one of those bad boys loaded up with F-35C and Super Bugs/Growlers would really be a sight to see! Anyway, in this show they talked about CVN-78 and how most people involved wanted it to be named after either the Enterprise or the America. I don't see how the United States' first commissioned CVN of this brand new futuristic class, that is supposed to represent the power and might of the US Navy/military in general, would be named after a do-little president.

USS Gerald Ford? I could imagine that most foreign people who will see/hear about this ship won't even know who Gerald Ford is, especially when it starts to do it's touring around the world. Because you have to admit, the US likes to show off it's new toys.

But would it be better off it it was named after good ol' George Dubya?

Amen again!..

Name the ship Enterprise or Lexington..America is good also. But Gerald Ford? The man did nothing as president and was not even elected president but was appointed as Vice president and became president once Nixon resigned.

com'on now, old Gerald made a really good showing on that episode of "The Simpsons". That's how I found out about Gerald.

But seriously, Enterprise would sound like something out of Star Trek. I'm all for Lexington, since my new company is located on Lexington Ave. hehehe

There have been eight ships in the history of the US Navy named Enterprise.

Two of them have been CV's named Enterprise...CV-6 and CVN-65 which has been in comission since 1961;

The eighth Enterprise (CVA(N)-65), the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, was launched 24 September 1960 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, Va.; sponsored by Mrs. William. B. Franke, wife of the Secretary of the Navy; and commissioned 25 November 1961

CVN-65 is scheduled to be decomissioned in 2013..just in time for CVN-78 to be in service.

USS Enterprise(CV-6) was the USN's most decorated ship..21 battle stars.

some unbelieveably impressive numbers for the F-22 have been reported from the recent exercise in Alaska:

As JSF development continues, the Air Force is touting early results from the F-22's involvement in recent combat exercises. The Air Force claims the aircraft achieved an "unprecedented" kill ratio of 108:0 during the joint Northern Edge exercise, which concluded last week in Alaska. Twelve F-22s deployed for the exercise, which used F-15s, F-16s and F/A-18s to simulate Sukhoi Su-27s and Su-30 Flankers as adversaries.

this is taken from an article on the JSF program in the most recent issue of Aviation Week.
