Looks like someone proclaimed greatness too early.

If anything, these ULWAs and UADFs (and/or their future iterations) should (if not will) have STOL capability and minimized (if not nil) drawbacks that would be omnipresent for a VTOL design.

Though, I wouldn't argue against any attempts by China to study and develop similar technologies as the V-BAT UCAV... Though, I'd see such configurations as more suitable for smaller, lower-end/attritable UCAVs than what is being described (read: boasted) by Shield AI.

On the other hand, a shaft-driven lift fan configuration (like the F-35B) would be more suitable for larger, higher-end UCAVs.

American Think tank believe that the US need convention powered submarines, not just nuclear powered

From a strategic perspective, the same is true for aircraft carriers. USN needs more CVs to fill the gaps, rather than putting all its eggs in CVNs, and then keep falling into a cycle of overdue duty-delayed maintenance-other CVNs overdue duty. But no, the blind worship of CVNs is too prevalent.

I strongly disagree for SSNs. CVs maybe, disregarding shipyard issues, but the performance difference between conventional supercarriers and nuclear isn't too noticeable. But for SSNs, they have a massive tactical and operational advantage over conventional submarines. Speed is the big one. and so is range. For the kind of war the USN is expected to fight, SSKs are worthless, especially with nations like Japan and SK to pick up the slack.

Are you 100% sure they'll join your war against China?
