Boeing simply builds great aircraft. This is a video of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner rehearsing for the upcoming Paris Airshow. Amazing video. The take-off looks more extreme than it really is because of the angle the video was taken at...still, it is very impressive.

This is no really military...but since Boeing has converted aircraft in the past to military applications...this one would make a great example of that in the future.

Don't know if this will work. Should see a video embed from General Atomics. They don't have a Youtube channel so I used the "share" button.

---ok didn't work.

Airbus say what?!

European aircraft maker Airbus believes the United States will be the biggest customer for its A400M military transport plane, despite a fatal crash involving one of them during a test flight last month.

“By the next decade at the latest, the US armed forces will be the biggest customer for the aircraft,” Airbus chief executive Tom Enders told the weekly magazine WirtschaftsWoche in an interview.

Despite its current technical problems, there was no other rival product at the moment, Enders argued.

Boeing’s C-17 was larger and Lockheed Martin’s C-130 was smaller.

“But a lot of countries don’t want either extreme. For the next few years, there will only be one alternative, the A400M, which is also a lot more fuel-efficient and more versatile,” he said.

An A400M plane crashed during a test on May 9 near Seville in Spain, killing four of the six people on board and seriously injuring the two others.

The A400M, a large, propeller-driven transport aircraft, was launched in 2003 and is assembled in Seville. But Britain, Germany, Turkey, Malaysia and Spain grounded their A400M planes after the crash.

An initial analysis of the black boxes revealed that three of the aircraft’s four engines failed, Airbus has said.

Enders said Airbus was sticking to its sales and earnings targets for this year, despite the crash.

“We’re on the right path to achieve our published goals for 2015,” the CEO said.

Airbus is looking to increase both sales and earnings this year.

“In 2014, our operating profit was four billion euros on sales of 60 billion euros,” he said. Cash flow was positive, at 88 million euros, compared with a negative cash flow of around one billion euros in 2013.

Turning to the possibility of upgrading its super jumbo A380, Enders said a decision would be reached by the end of this year.

“The administrative board will need until the end of the year to get a full picture of the situation and to reach a decision,” Enders said.

“It is one of the most difficult product decisions of the last few years. But it’s clear: there won’t be an A380 with new engines for just one customer.”

Dubai’s Emirates Airline in particular is pushing for a more fuel-efficient variant of the superjumbo.

Enders said Airbus had succeeded in reducing fuel consumption of the A380 by several percent even without the engines.

“One option I’m concretely thinking about would be innovations in the cabin,” he said, adding that new engines would be one of a number of possible engines.

The A400M can do things no C-130 can. It’s much bigger than a C-130. The air platform is reportedly incredibly stable in flight, raising the possibility of launching rockets from it or putting high accuracy guns on it.

But it’s got a few problems. First, it’s European. Second, much of the senior Airbus leadership remains deeply scarred by their experience with their last big American sales effort, the failed try to sell the Air Force the A330 tanker, first with Northrop Grumman and then through their American subsidiary, now known as Airbus Americas.

I heard last year that Airbus was hopeful of beginning the briefing process in the Pentagon, catching the ear of some Air Force or Special Operations Command leaders.

But few American fliers know anything about the A400M Grizzly. It’s much bigger than the C-130 since it was designed to give Europeans something they didn’t have — strategic lift. It can carry big loads a long way. For example, the French military can now fly a helicopter to the fight aboard an A400M instead of shipping it in pieces and reassembling it.

But an A400M crashed in May, killing four crew members. Incorrectly installed flight software was found to be the cause. This morning, with French Presdeitn Francoise Hollande watching. an A400M soared over the field at Le Bourget Airport, completing some combat climbs and sharp turns to demonstrate the plane is back and remains safe.

Now the company must decide the benefits and risks of bringing an A400M or two to the United States to show off its impressive capabilities. Will American lawmakers reflexively oppose a European plane, even one from an ally as staunch as France has been since 911? The Army is buying the Lakota helicopter from Airbus Military. In fact, the Lakota is on display in the American corral here at the show.

If I were an Airbus executive and wanted to test the market, I couldn’t think of a better way to do it than bringing the A400M to America for a week or two and showing off its capabilities — especially to SOCOM. We’ll see what they decide.

A400M is bigger than C130J, and it may be more stable but there are a few things that I think the Breaking Defense article missed. First the USAF and USAFSOC already have a replacement for aged AC130s the AC130J. Which already has Rockets, missiles, bombs and cannons.
The more pressing lag is the more traditional roles that C130 filled transport. For that A400M has the capacity but may face three fights.
The Army, the Competition and the Air Force.
The US Army is the biggest user of USAF services in logistics. They and the Air Force are having a slow speed fight though over the needs of a transport. The Army wants the end product to be of A400M payload class but with V/STOL. Translation they want a Typhoon force Tilt rotor. This is why the US Army has drafted the "Ultra"JMR requirement to light a fire under the USAF. Bell Helicopter, Boeing and Lockheed Martin in in alliance with Karem aerospace have all looked into the possibilities yet its still a paper fight.
The Competition.
Boeing and Lockheed Martin are not going to lay down for Airbus. Northrop Grumman seems out of the aircraft building save for bombers and E2 Hawkeyes. But Boeing builds transports and Lockheed Martin builds C130J neither is likely to just let Airbus in. Concept work has been done on a number of options by both C130XL, mini C17, speed agile concepts by both. There are also options for licensing designs like the KC390 from embraer or the Japanese C1.
Finally the USAF itself.
Would the USAF be willing to accept A400M? Could it? Remember that the US Military cheque book has been getting tightened and that the DOD operates under the Berry Amendment. Those mean that Airbus would have to open a assembly like and manufacture parts here in the States. They might be able to sent over 1-2 for Demos but production and acquisition mean Made in the USA. That's not cheap. The Air Force would also have to justify their reason for buying A400M rather then investment in other offerings. And reason if the A400M has the speed and capacity to fit its wanted missions.

If Airbus believes that they have answers to all of those then perhaps they might get there wish otherwise its wishful thinking.

General Dynamics NASSCO has delivered the USNS Lewis B. Puller, the third ship in the U.S. Navy’s Mobile Landing Platform program and the first to be configured as Afloat Forward Staging Base.

The USNS Lewis B. Puller (MLP 3 AFSB) was delivered to the Navy in San Diego during a ceremony held last Friday at the NASSCO shipyard.

The Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) AFSB variant is optimized to support a variety of maritime-based missions and further strengthens the Navy’s new seabasing capabilities, with an added flight deck, berthing, fuel storage, equipment storage, and repair spaces. The ship is named in honor of the late U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General Lewis “Chesty” Puller, the most decorated Marine and the only one to be awarded five Navy Crosses.

Construction on the USNS Lewis B. Puller began in 2013.

MLPs are highly flexible platforms that provide logistics movement from sea to shore in support of a broad range of military operations.

The AFSB variant is designed around four core capabilities: aviation, berthing, equipment staging area, and command and control. The ASFB modifications add a 52,000 square-foot flight deck, fuel and equipment storage, repair spaces, magazines, mission planning spaces and accommodations for up to 250 personnel. The ship is capable of supporting multiple missions including Air Mine Counter Measures (AMCM), counter-piracy operations, maritime security operations, humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions and Marine Corps crisis response. The ship is also designed to support MH-53 and MH-60 helicopters, and will be upgraded to support MV-22 tilt rotor aircraft.

“This ship represents a leap forward in flexible capability for the U.S. Navy,” said Capt. Henry Stevens, Strategic and Theater Sealift program manager for Program Executive Office (PEO), Ships. “NASSCO was able to leverage a mature design and hot production line to meet the Navy’s requirements for an AFSB platform while minimizing program cost and risk.”

The U.S. Navy has awarded NASSCO a contract for the detail design and construction of a fourth Mobile Landing Platform, to be configured as another Afloat Forward Staging Base.

The MLP program comprises five ships across two variants in support of the Maritime Prepositioning Force (MPF) and an AFSB initiative. USNS Montford Point (MLP 1) and USNS John Glenn (MLP 2) were delivered and are currently serving in the U.S. Navy fleet. Construction on MLP 4 is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2015 and a fifth AFSB ship is planned for procurement in fiscal year 2017.

, USA TODAY1:09 p.m. EDT June 15, 2015

June 15 -- Colt Defense, the 179-year-old gunmaker that supplies M4 carbines and M16 rifles for the U.S. and foreign militaries, filed for bankruptcy amid delayed government sales and declining demand. Bloomberg

Colt Defense, the storied firearms maker, announced late Sunday that it has filed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.

Colt said that in making the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, it hopes the process will allow it to quickly sell its business operations in the U.S and Canada. A firm, Sciens Capital Management, plans to buy virtually all of Colt's assets.

"The plan we are announcing and have filed today will allow Colt to restructure its balance sheet while meeting all of its obligations to customers, vendors, suppliers and employees and providing for maximum continuity in the Company's current and future business operations," said Keith Maib, Chief Restructuring Officer of Colt Defense, in a statement.

Because of the filing, the sale should go through without all the debt that otherwise would have been associated with it.

The plan is to keep Colt healthy and vigorous, continuing to make guns in West Hartford, Conn.

Colt has produced a lot of famous weapons over the years. Pistols such as the Colt .45 became legendary.

United Technologies Corp. announced Monday that it will separate its Sikorksy Aircraft business as it exits the helicopter business.

The Hartford, Conn.-based company says it will focus on high-technology systems and services to the aerospace and building industries.

Sikorsky makes military and commercial helicopters and has a predominately military customer base. It is known for manufacturing Black Hawk helicopters.

United Technologies said a decision on whether Sikorsky will be spun off or sold is expected by the end of the third quarter.

Gregory Hayes, United Technologies Corp. president and CEO, said: "Our strategic review has confirmed that exiting the helicopter business is the best path forward for United Technologies."

He said the separation will allow both United Technologies and Sikorsky "to better focus on their core businesses."

Excluding Sikorsky, United Technologies expects 2015 earnings per share of $6.35 to $6.55 on sales of approximately $58 to $59 billion. Including Sikorsky, earnings per share are anticipated at $6.55 to $6.85, from $6.85 to $7.05.

United Technologies expects 10 cents to 20 cents per share of separation costs and a 10 cent per share decline in Sikorsky's operational expectations for the year due to weakness in the oil and gas markets.

The decision is subject to final board approval.
