IMO they could've turn those old CVs into a retirement living centers for veterans in all branches of the military. It would save tax payers huge amounts of money plus it has everything you needed already. It could be refurbished lightly with volunteers plus the retirees living there could do some light maintenance work to keep them going.

Nope.. Have you ever been on a Carrier? Those ladders(stairs) are too steep for most old foggies. Trust me. And the cost just to run the electrical would be prohibitive. And who's going to pay for it? And most vets don't really need any sort of shelter. Those that do ..well IMO have brought those conditions upon themselves.

We do need to help those veterans in true need.

True, but I still think there should be some kind of contest out there for the public to come up with ideas old CVs use. It would be fun and I would definitely enter that contest.;)

The USN would never sell a super carrier to anyone.

I believe the USN retired all it's oil fired CVs simply because of the cost of fuel to run them plus the heavy maintenance factor.

I believe all the Forrestal & Kitty Hawk class CVs could have been maintained to this day.. IF the USN really wanted to. Just my opinion.

.

Just joking on this comment, but with all the problems the French have had with the Charles de Gaulle, the USA could have sold it to the French Navy.

Has not the Charles de Gaulle been inactive for a while now? Problems with the propellers and the power plant.

Thank you for the update Popeye. Good to hear that she is fit for service. I do remember reading that she did have problems during construction (five year delay) and that there was a propeller issue and power plant problem during her 2007-2008 overhaul.

All joking aside. So the USA could not sell a super carrier, even to one of its closest allies? Is this a government policy, or are these carriers (even the old ones) more advanced than what an allie would be able to produce, or should have.

Thanks

You are welcome.

The US is not willing to sell it's carriers to any nation for concern of "another nation'' learning construction details of the hull. That is my understanding.

Presently the following retired USN CVs are awaiting disposal.

Ranger, Independence, Constellation, John F Kennedy

Kitty Hawk is held in reserve.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel plans to shrink the United States Army to its smallest force since before the World War II buildup and eliminate an entire class of Air Force attack jets in a new spending proposal that officials describe as the first Pentagon budget to aggressively push the military off the war footing adopted after the terror attacks of 2001.

The proposal, released on Monday, takes into account the fiscal reality of government austerity and the political reality of a president who pledged to end two costly and exhausting land wars. A result, the officials argue, will be a military capable of defeating any adversary, but too small for protracted foreign occupations.

Outlines of some of the budget initiatives, which are subject to congressional approval, have surfaced, an indication that even in advance of its release the budget is certain to come under political attack.

For example, some members of Congress, given advance notice of plans to retire air wings, have vowed legislative action to block the move, and the National Guard Association, an advocacy group for those part-time military personnel, is circulating talking points urging Congress to reject anticipated cuts. State governors are certain to weigh in, as well. And defense-industry officials and members of Congress in those port communities can be expected to oppose any initiatives to slow Navy shipbuilding.

The new American way of war will be underscored in Mr. Hagel’s budget, which protects money for Special Operations forces and cyberwarfare. And in an indication of the priority given to overseas military presence that does not require a land force, the proposal will — at least for one year — maintain the current number of aircraft carriers at 11.

The Navy would be allowed to purchase two destroyers and two attack submarines every year. But 11 cruisers will be ordered into reduced operating status during modernization.

Although consideration was given to retiring an aircraft carrier, the Navy will keep its fleet of 11 — for now. The George Washington would be brought in for overhaul and nuclear refueling — a lengthy process that could be terminated in future years under tighter budgets.

Sadly, my friend, we have a current administration who does not believe in American strength or leadership.

They believe in their hearts that America itself is major part of what has been worng with the world and that it needs to be "fundamentally transformed," as they promised, and they are going about doing just that...across the board.

Economically, socially, foreign policy, and militarily.

It is sickening.

Many in elected and appointed office...sadly even some appointed to leadership positions in the agency in which I work...have displayed a contempt for America and feel that this nation has somehow, "raped the world," and deserves to be punished. In my opinion they are going about making that happen and reducing our abilituy to stand strong on the world stage.

I pray to God in Heaven that the American people will wake up...and stand up...and return to the traditional God-fearing roots and moral principles that made the US strong...and made it the most charitable, giving, helping, and greatest defender of liberty in the world...despite whatever errors it has made.

In the mean time...they move forward with plans like those announced by Hagel.

Sadly the BHO team knows that the military is sworn to uphold the constitution, the senate and congress have forgotten what that means, so they are continuing to exercise their little social experiments in the US military, as I have warned the USAF has been "feminized" into political correctness, Go NAVY!
