US Financial Crisis/Bailout, China's Role

Don't think the Chinese gov't isn't worried. The words and actions speaks panic and confusion. You have officials openly talking about this year as being one of the most difficult years in terms of preserving social stability. And that's coming out of the mouths of officials who don't speak lightly on matters concerning the economy and especially concerning domestic security.

the Chinese gov is as worried as the US gov. but if you think that this is somehow gonna escalate into a massive tide of social unrest then you are underestimating the CCP. workers who lost jobs only want to make a living, if you give them tmr's breakfast then they wont go to the street today. so chances are there will obviously a slight increase in protests. but they will likely remain isolated from each other, as opposed to congregating into one single movement. its irresponsible to say right now that China is gonna make it through this with no problem, but its also irresponsible to say that China is f*cked without a doubt. that's prolly what the westerners wanna think, but the China model will sure to prevail. remember China as it stands is still the best performing economic body in the world.

the only problem now is where to find buyers, we are witnessing the collapse of every single pillar of US economy. for decades the US have been moving away from the manufacturing industry, and now their financial market collapses...they have nothing to resort to. even when japan got screwed up back in the 90s, they still had manufacturing industry. what does the americans have now other than bubbles in the housing market? but if the democrats wanna revive the economy, which is next to impossible, they are gonna have to revive the manufacturing industry. great powers always rise on manufacturing industry. but the result comin from that is less jobs outsourced to China. so they best strategy for China is not only to exploit its own market, but to build a bigger domestic manufacturing industry.

but yea, overall if anyone is expecting something like the Tiananmen square incident to come out of this one...it aint gonna happen

9% is the approximate GDP growth for the year. If you strictly look at the last quarter, during which trade has really fallen off, the rate of growth has slowed dramatically. If you want to test whether de-coupling holds, it would be a good time to do so when demand from the West falls off. Right now, it's falling off a cliff.

No problem if you say that's old figure, it shouldn't be long before the next set of figures comes out, we'll see. Sure trade is down but domestic demand is holding up & that's the whole argument isn't it ? ie Trade was never really as big a component as domestic demand & investments but we'll see with the next set of figures.
When is the gov't not worried ? When they wanted to fight corruptions they brought up risks to stability, when they wanted to fight inflation, they said the same thing all while the economy was hot etc. Like I said some time ago, governments around the world, including China have their own agenda especially with public rhetoric.
When they say it'll be worse in years, it has to be seen in the context of the white hot growth of recent years which has brought about multi-year high inflation & other imbalances.
But really it's your choice to continue to predict unrests. This forum will be here for a long time. I'm sure it'll be brought up here if unrests occur in the future, then we can discuss.

i agree with most of what you said cept that trade plays a bigger role in China's economy than other countries'

but yeah there is that inclination to say how the CCP has been livin on economic growth and when its finally slowed down the CCP will collapse. well the truth is every government lives on economic growth and i remember China's economic growth have dropped below 8% many times and the CCP seems to be doing fine.

It appears that we should be wary in accepting Chinese official newsreports on affairs of the country and economy, as it can be full of distortions.Although its aimed at TV programs, I venture to say that the printed media can be included.

Chinese intellectuals have signed an open letter calling for a boycott of state television news programmes.
By Shirong Chen
The letter says China's Central Television (CCTV) has turned its news and historical drama series into propaganda to brainwash its audience.
The author of the damning letter told the BBC that the action should at least serve as a health warning to the susceptible public.
The authorities have been alarmed by the latest development.
They tend to accuse the Western media of biased coverage of China.
But this open letter accuses CCTV of systematic bias in its news coverage.
'Whitewash'
The letter - signed by more than 20 academics and lawyers - lists six broad categories of bias and brainwashing.
It says the state TV monopoly has ignored many stories of social unrest and riots, and whitewashed serious events like the recent milk contamination scandal.
The letter's author, Ling Cangzhou, told the BBC that its signatories were fed up with the positive spin on domestic news from the central TV station and the negative tone on international events.
He said that the letter should at least alert the public to the problem, though the state TV broadcaster is too pervasive to be boycotted effectively.
Media controls meant the letter had to be published on a US-based website, but it has been picked up widely by Chinese websites.

Hmm, some 'intellectuals' go to BBC & some US media to publish their letter abt media distortion in China. Is it just me or the intellect part seems to be missing from these 'intellectuals' ? :D

plc101prc but if the democrats wanna revive the economy said:
America may yet have the last laugh. If Obama's vision for America is to have its industry based on green technology of the 21st century comes to fruition, while China's, because of cost, stays with 20th century technology.

Actually China is one of those countries that are heavily investing in alternative energy research and development. You can read another thread on this forum on this. They include stuff like among the world's largest solar energy farms to coal liquification to HTGR reactors and even fusion power research, where currently the world's largest experimental reactor on this is in China.

Yes, Im aware of all that, they have certainly made impressive progress and I wish them every success, but when "push comes to shove" my dollars with the USA when it comes to implementation.

I also read a interview with Hu who stated that despite the research in newer technologies, China would in the immediate future and in the main, be staying with tried and proven technology because of the price advantages.

wow these intellectuals dont know the first thing about media reports.

this is more of a political stunt for the outsiders to watch and BBC willingly took the bait.
it doesnt matter where you are, dont ever expect the truth to be situated in plain view. if you look hard enough and think hard enough, even propaganda stuff can yield a lot of information. the intel guys in the military higher ppl to spend hours and hours reading newspapers and ANALYZE their content. ppl nowadays are so lazy that they expect to know what's really happening around the world without turning their brains on.
