Type 093 Thread

I have created this thread specifically to discuss about the PLAN's new Type 093 nuclear-attack submarines, so please put PLAN diesel subs and subs from other navies out of this discussion, OK? I have a few questions to ask all of you regarding the 093 SSN.

1. Are the first two Type 093 SSNs currently operational in PLAN service?

2. How many will be built?

3. Does it really resemble the Victor III or not?

4. What is its noise level?

5. Are the 093s armed with the Russian Shkval rocket torpedoes?

6. Will there be a successor class to the 093, like 095 perhaps?

I hope some of these questions can be answered.

Could you not have put this in the sub thread?
1. still going through sea trial, probably joining service soon
2. The third one is getting built. I don't know, maybe 4-6? They are working on 095 right now, so we might not see that many 093.
3. Apparently, the original goal was to reach Victor III, but it has received some help from the Russians' latest SSN.
4. this is all classified. Only real experts would know this. Speculation is 130 db, because that's the noise level of Victor III. Chinese sites have speculated much lower, as low as 108 db.
5. possible, but I'd think SSN will be mainly carrying LACMs.
6. yes.

Thanks for all these valuable information, tphuang. It looks like the 093 is set to herald a new era of Chinese naval power. With its booming economy, who knows what China might produce in the next 5-10 years. Anyway, congrats to China for being the only Asian country with operational nuclear subs ( Russia is Eurasian ).
