052C/052D Class Destroyers

I think they have settled on a 4 tier Navy.

Type-055 Cruiser
Type-052 Destroyer
Type-054/57 Frigate
Type-056 Corvette

I used to think that they should standardise on Type-055 Cruiser plus Type-054/057 Frigate.
But now I think there is a place for a Type-052 Destroyer hull for the following main reasons.

1. Cost per missile launch for the Type-052 is cheaper at a campaign level than Type-055, given that the supply of expensive missiles will run out quickly.
2. Plus operations would be in the Western Pacific near Chinese ports, so resupply time for fuel and munitions is not an issue.

It's all detailed in the ORBAT thread.

To early to tell what PLAN decided. In my opinion China had to build 052 class because she couldn't build 055 before. Now she can and if she continues to build more 052 class from now on then yes, they decided 052 has a place but if they focus on 055 and we wont see any more 052(x) then 055+057 is the future.

I’m tentatively sure they’ve decided to go with a 055+052D+057 force structure given that they seem to have continued some iteration on the 052D and there have been some chatter about a 052E. My guess behind such a thinking would be that going with a three tier build affords them a bit more flexibility and robustness in their fleet structure, so that they’re not putting too many eggs into one basket. There might also be some tactical advantages to having a fleet with more units that can cover a greater range of vectors, especially in a networked combat environment.

For the past 20 years, we've seen Chinese military spending at a modest 2% of GDP.

But 9 DDGs this year would eventually mean a fleet of 300 DDGs. Last year, it was 7 DDGs.

Even my previous high estimate was only 6 DDGs per year.

If this indicative of Chinese military spending overall, it begs the question, the US and Russia routinely spend almost twice as much (4% of GDP) on the military.

So has China switched to a permanently higher level of military spending?

If so, congratulations are in order for the American national security establishment.

With the trade war and China designated as military enemy number one, they've hastened the day when China displaces the US military from the Western Pacific.

the endgame in terms of the number of
  1. aircraft carriers
  2. Type 055 cruisers (please don't nitpick about the classification, possible later designation of a class with A or for example X or whatever)
  3. Type 052 destroyers
  4. Type 054 frigates

  1. 6
  2. 24
  3. 24
  4. 36

sum = 90 major (4k+) surface combatants including aircraft carriers
(at that point they wouldn't grow, but would be retiring older copies while replacing them with either newly built, or with ships which are currently unknown)

052 hulls already exceeded that, 24 number.. 055+052 number will be more than 48 (Chinese current destroyer fleet is at >48 anyway). My guess will be around 60.
