Unused and waiting Type 052D there should be 121 Qiqihar. Its going to the 10th, PLAN's "black swan" or "old men" destroyer division that's been the hold outs for Ludas until recently. They only gotten their first modern destroyer last year, 120 Chengdu, and gradually transitioning from the Ludas to the 052D, which is what I would say, a big jump technologically. The division though, should have some 054As. But as you see from 120 Chengdu's recent replenishment exercise with a tanker along with 101 Nanchang, they are starting to get the hang of it. This is probably the first notable exercise I have seen with a modern destroyer with the 10th.

The 10th is being modernized, with 120 and 121 being the only short 052D in the group, and both ships are of the second 052D batch which has Type 1130 and improved electronics. The rest of the 10th's modernization will be based on 052DL. This division is also doing trials on a 052DL that will also fall under their jurisdiction later.

Military has to compete with private industry too with more lucrative offer. And foriegn firms.

PLAN already has ~45 destroyers operational an increase of this number to ~60 in coming ~10-15 years will not create much of a problem from human resources perspective.

I’m tentatively sure they’ve decided to go with a 055+052D+057 force structure given that they seem to have continued some iteration on the 052D and there have been some chatter about a 052E. My guess behind such a thinking would be that going with a three tier build affords them a bit more flexibility and robustness in their fleet structure, so that they’re not putting too many eggs into one basket. There might also be some tactical advantages to having a fleet with more units that can cover a greater range of vectors, especially in a networked combat environment.

That is true.

But in addition, given a fixed procurement budget and a simulated 60 day campaign, a mixed fleet of 055 + 052 + 057 definitely provides more capability (more missile launches + radars) than a 055 + 057 fleet.

any numbers update after Dec 26, 2019

Andy?

I still stick to
#267 Jura, Jul 28, 2017

the endgame in terms of the number of
  1. aircraft carriers
  2. Type 055 cruisers (please don't nitpick about the classification, possible later designation of a class with A or for example X or whatever)
  3. Type 052 destroyers
  4. Type 054 frigates

  1. 6
  2. 24
  3. 24
  4. 36

sum = 90 major (4k+) surface combatants including aircraft carriers
(at that point they wouldn't grow, but would be retiring older copies while replacing them with either newly built, or with ships which are currently unknown)

My minimum estimate remains 3 destroyers per year for an overall fleet of 100.
It's only been 6 months, and this will be a decades long affair.

Plus I've previously pointed out to you that the number of 052 destroyers is already at 30+
So how can you still maintain your endgame of only 24 destroyers?

You need to revise your numbers, because reality has already blown through one of your estimates.

I also recall comments disparaging my imagination.
So I think this is an appropriate time to ask - why haven't you changed your reality in the past 6 months?

True on human resource, I always find the statement on lack of trained personnel in PLAN amusing. PLAN has 240,000 service persons, and has more than half a dozen naval universities and colleges/academies as well as training ships. It is more attractive for new recruits choosing between army and navy. There are many sailors waiting on shore for years before getting posted on a ship.

with the navy they can get to travel the world

but Chinese warships never venture out too far

maybe in the future they can deploy further making it a good and attractive career and good way to see the world while getting paid
